As a licensed psychoanalyst and graduate of the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies, I work with each patient based on their individual needs as the relationship develops.
Putting thoughts and emotions into words can have surprising and powerful results. There is a freedom in saying out loud what we have withheld or only said or ourselves. We begin to see our world from new perspectives, develop new ways of being in the world, and begin to make new choices. The purpose of a therapist is to be the person in your life undergoing this process with you, as a companion and guide. This is how I understand my work.

I am a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst with many years of experience treating adults, adolescents and children. While I utilize a wide range of current treatment techniques, my practice is based on a foundation of contemporary psychoanalytic approaches. I have found a psychodynamic perspective---the view that our emotional lives represent a continually evolving process that determines our lived experience in meaningful and purposive ways---to be essential for understanding a whole person and their current life situation.

Jung, his heirs and its interface with psychoanalytic, interpersonal and existential psychology.

These difficulties often relate to a background of patterns of thinking/feeling that interfere with our ability to live life fully. Through careful listening and discussion we will seek to understand these patterns This sets the stage for recognition and development of new patterns of living that seek engagement, recognition and embodiment. I am a licensed psychologist, Jungian analyst, co-founder and faculty member of the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association.

I also provide more frequent sessions to support deeper, psychoanalytic work.
As a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, I'm adept at working with children, adolescents, and adults virtually and in-person in Manhattan and Brooklyn. People seek me out for many reasons related to anxiety and depression, as well as when they are struggling with anger, traumatic events, feeling stuck, or who simply sensing that something's not quite right. Whether using play therapy with children or working psychodynamically with adults, I approach the therapeutic process as a collaboration to gain insight and support meaningful change.

Psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a unique practice of listening to the unconscious undertones of life: what one wants, and what gets in the way of achieve it. As a tool to understand what our bodies and minds are communicating through anxiety, addiction and repetitive patterns, talk therapy can build links and bring to the foreground what has been kept hidden or secret. By understanding the function and survival mechanism of our defenses, and by connecting free-associative speech to our desires, we are given a new choice as to what we want to hold on to, and what we can let go of.

I decided to pursue psychoanalytic training after a fulfilling career in finance.
We create personal narratives to make sense of our subjective experience of life. Embedded in our narrative, are the internalized images of ourselves that we draw on to explain our lives (e.g. unworthy, undesirable, shameful, superior, unappreciated etc.). In therapy we examine the images that so often lead us to make the unconscious choices that return us to the painfully familiar circumstances that have come to define our life. As we become aware of the ways in which our images have unwittingly influenced our choices, we will have the opportunity to make new choices that may better support living the life to which we aspire.

However, having learned from my experience with children, adolescents, and adults in both community clinic, psychoanalytic institute, and hospital settings, I do not to hesitate to interweave other practical techniques to help address each person’s unique concerns.
I believe that each therapist and patient create their own treatment, which tends to take on the form needed to address the patient’s deep rooted concerns in living and relating. This form is ever evolving, and often leads to places — modes of interaction, dreams, unexpected emotions, reflections, memories — that relate in surprising ways to issues bothering the patient in daily life. Speaking about and feeling all that emerges, together with a therapist who is warm and present, shifts the experience of one’s self and environment. Consequently, opportunities emerge to live life differently.

My psychoanalytic approach surprises people by making connections that have an immediate emotional impact.
I see people who: have what they want but they are not happy, they feel guilty about their happiness. Who struggle to see a vision of the future, who fear they will never have what they need. Who wonder if the problem is practical and real or if there is something they are doing - but asking these questions alone only makes things feel worse. Who feel too much or too little, who cry all the time or wish they could cry. Who can’t stop repeating the same mistakes because they at least provide momentary relief. Above all, who want to be at peace with themselves. I am a practitioner of Zen Buddhism and meditation.

Training supervisor for CAPA (China American Psychoanalytic Alliance) a long distance training program for psychoanalytic psychotherapy candidates living and working in China.
I work with a wide range of clients, from college students to professionals. A large percentage of my practice is made up of individuals in the performing and creative arts. I find a psychological curiosity on the part of the client to be especially helpful in the process.

I work from a psychodynamic position, with the aim to raise the curiosity over behavioral patterns that do not fit with the way we think of ourselves. I work with adults from a diversity of backgrounds and I believe the strength of my approach lies in helping people to expand their understanding of complex issues, not only by listening to their explicit and implicit narratives, but also paying attention to dreams, body language, and to the experiences and images that arise during sessions. I use psychoanalytic theory as a lens to process what takes place—an approach that does not necessarily need a couch or multiple sessions a week.

I graduated from NYU Silver School of Social Work with an MSW, earned a law degree from NYU, hold a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, and am a psychoanalytic candidate at PPSC.
Therapy is a place to explore feelings of loneliness, anxiety, depression, grief, and shame, and begin the work of generating positive and lasting change. My primary goal is to provide a nurturing therapeutic environment, free of judgment and rooted in empathy, where you feel heard and empowered. It is my firm belief that listening intently and with compassion, in a safe therapeutic setting, can help you navigate even the biggest challenges in your relationships with other people and with yourself. I’ve worked with clients facing profound life stressors, including death of family members, medical illness, and psychiatric diagnoses.

If you are unhappy about your relationships; conflicted in work, studies or vocational choice; or are managing your anxieties through behaviors like binge-eating or substance abuse, then I can help you understand how self-defeating patterns arise, and give you tools to change them. I am experienced in both psychoanalytic and behavioral approaches to treatment and believe in adapting these to fit the individual, in order to create a strong alliance that will build confidence in your ability to change. It is never too late to start making a significant difference in your life, even at an advanced age.

in Developmental Psychology, and certificates in both psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy from the Institute for Contemporary Psychology.
Therapy is about listening in-depth - to stories of our past and present, to our emotions, our affects, and our ways of relating. I create a safe space to listen carefully and empathically to help you understand how you have developed into who you are, and what gets in the way in the here and now. There are many ways to do this work. I believe the most important place to start in any modality is by establishing a solid therapeutic alliance. This relationship becomes a vehicle for exploring other ways of relating. I have a particular interest in childhood trauma, attachment, depression, anxiety, and relationship difficulties.

My theoretical approaches are Object Relations and Relational psychoanalytic perspectives.
Anyone can encounter unexpected situations and circumstances, be hurt, suffer, and feel frustrated, as if they have lost their way. I am a licensed psychoanalyst in New York and New Jersey. I accompany my clients in engaging their unresolved issues and internal conflicts and improving relationships. I am sensitive to multicultural and immigration matters as well as racial and career identities.

I specialize in psychoanalytic therapy, integrating aspects of CBT, DBT, and ACT if indicated.
There are countless good reasons to begin therapy. These can include discreet symptoms, depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, low self-worth, intimacy issues, disordered eating, compulsive behavior, career stagnation, illness, physical limitation, identity struggles, life transitions, and 'simply' feeling that there could be more to life. Collaboration with a well-matched professional allows for a deep working-through of a whole range of difficulties, often with lasting transformation. My goal is to help you live better, by working with you to free up and enhance your ability to thrive.

I also provide clinical consultations and serve as a faculty and a supervisor at the William Alanson White Institute’s program for intensive psychoanalytic psychotherapy (IPPP).
In my work, I aspire to create an atmosphere of safety, respect and trust, a space where judgement is suspended and we can freely explore and understand your needs, motivations and goals. Therapy could be used in many ways. You could choose to focus on particular symptoms, or develop strategies for certain situations. You may also use therapeutic space as a kind of playground where you can let yourself go, experience your inner reality and reflect on what happened to achieve greater self-awareness. My goal is to meet you where you are.

My training is in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis which means that I view the therapeutic relationship as central to the change process and that I help patients to understand that their conflicts from the past affect the way they feel and act in the present.
I have been treating patients in psychotherapy for over 35 years. Therapy offers people help towards change, change towards the life they want. Yet,for various reasons, this life has not been attainable. My approach is to offer patients a safe, supportive, understanding environment in which they can explore their hopes and fears and the obstacles that get in their way of having a fuller, richer life.

Psychoanalytic Therapists
Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
