I use a contemporary psychoanalytic approach to address a variety of issues by engaging with and honoring each person's unique history, internal experience, and personal and cultural circumstances. I work with people from many different backgrounds who find themselves struggling in their lives: those who feel stuck or stalled in approaching a crossroads, those who can't get past what has happened or are going through something too big to bear alone, those who know where they want to be but can't seem to get there, and those too anxious or depressed even to look ahead.

Personal difficulties and the inner conflicts that often accompany them may present a challenge to what we understand of our identities, relationships, and personal histories. Through the work of speaking about our desires and difficulties in the presence of an attentive, skilled listener these conflicts can often reveal previously hidden truths that drive our everyday experiences. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy provides a space for confidential, non-judgmental listening and relating to the unique aspects of your experience, to help you work through conflicts.

Schooled in both Eastern and Western psychology, I bring a contemplative, fluid perspective to the exploration of the human mind and the alleviation of suffering. Using a psychoanalytic, interpersonal approach, I help my clients make meaning from experience and expand their understanding of self. Together we find pathways that lead beyond old limitations and engraved patterns of behavior towards a life of greater freedom and ease. I am strong but gentle, and able to contain a great deal of distress.

I completed my Master's Degree in Social Work from New York University, am a New York City based, State Licensed Clinical Social Worker (NYS, NJ), and have a certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the NYFS/CFS Institute.
Anxieties, insecurity, depression, difficult patterns in relationships or work, and problems focusing can be understood and changed, so you have more energy and confidence to devote to living. Become more connected to yourself and others through a specialized process of exploration with a trained professional, and see a difference in your life. A therapist's expertise and experience are very important, but the key ingredient of effective therapy is a "good fit" between you and your therapist. If you'd like to see how it would be to work together, I would be pleased to hear from you.

I use a flexible yet practical counseling style that includes evidence-based methods, including CBT and DBT, through a psychoanalytic lens, that will be based on your needs and preference.
Sometimes we feel weighed down with difficulty making changes. Anxiety or depression can block us from moving towards our goals. Navigating relationships can be complicated and feel overwhelming. History of trauma can effect our present lives. In these times, we need a supportive, objective person to help us find our way. Let's work together to develop a plan that fits your needs and values and can ease some of the tensions.

I am studying psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Contemporary Freudian Society.
Life can often be challenging, overwhelming, and confusing. I believe therapy should be a safe and supportive space to process and resolve past difficulties, current stressors, and anxieties about the future. I aim to empower individuals and couples to be their authentic selves, to pursue the lives they want, and to embrace vulnerability in their relationships. Together, we will work to help you achieve your goals and feel more at peace with yourself.

After receiving psychoanalytic training in South America and Europe, I became certified as a psychotherapist by NAAP (National Association for Advancement of Psychoanalysis) in NYC.
I am a certified psychotherapist and treat individuals with symptoms such as anxiety or depression, reflecting deeper unresolved emotional conflicts that need processing and working-through. These conflicts cause mental pain and can negatively affect all areas of the individual's life: personal and professional relationships, intimate relationships, career development, general physical health and well-being. My orientation is psychodynamic. I am an out-of-network provider and can give receipts for reimbursement.

I also offer in-person and tele-health talk therapy and psychoanalytic services for adults.
Hello. If your child or adolescent needs support, it's likely that I can help. I am dually credentialed in psychoanalysis (an advanced form of psychotherapy) and education (I was a university professor in the field of education for 25 years). One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is a safe space where they can work through their challenges with a professional.

I have been teaching and supervising trainees in postgraduate psychoanalytic training institutes since 1985 and have a wide network of colleagues.
I'm a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst with more than 35 years of experience. My goal is to enable my clients to better understand themselves and their hidden emotional conflicts. Self-awareness and self-knowledge are empowering because our deepest desires for love, connectedness, and achievement are typically tangled up in bad feelings - like shame, guilt or anxiety -- that obstruct us from pursuing their fulfillment. These bad feelings are often based on unrealistic ideas, the residues of childhood experience. I work with clients to disentangle their vital wishes from these constraints so that they can live more authentic and creative lives.

In addition to working with adults and couples I provide clinical supervision to candidates in psychoanalytic training at Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy.
Experience has taught me that there is no single script for a successful therapeutic endeavor. You bring to each encounter exactly what you are experiencing in the moment. You may arrive looking for clarity, healing, or hope. Our task is to clear some space to enable new thoughts and perspectives to emerge. Insight can lead to change, but not always in a straight line. Our ongoing conversation is the place of discovery, dynamic struggle, and meaning making, all of which contribute to new ways of relating and perceiving.

Adrienne was trained in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy, an approach that attempts to understand how past events affect current feelings and behavior. In addition to her foundation in traditional psychotherapies, she also utilizes more current, evidence based modalities, such as CBT, to help clients reframe various experiences that are causing discomfort. Adrienne has worked with various populations and diagnoses, starting her career working with people grappling with issues of substance abuse, and transitioning to working with those suffering from disordered eating.

I work with a wide range of clients, from college students to professionals. A large percentage of my practice is made up of individuals in the performing and creative arts. I find a psychological curiosity on the part of the client to be especially helpful in the process.

I specialize in psychoanalytic therapy, integrating aspects of CBT, DBT, and ACT when indicated.
There are countless reasons to engage in psychotherapy. These, especially at the outset, can include concerns like discreet symptoms, depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, low self-worth, intimacy issues, disordered eating, compulsive behavior, career stagnation, illness, physical limitation, identity struggles, life transitions, and feeling that there could be more to life. Collaboration with a well-matched professional can allow for a deep working-through with lasting transformation. My goal is to help you live more freely, by working with you to restore and enhance your experience of joy and thriving.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
