With advanced training in Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, I specialize in working with moms experiencing anxiety, depression, and the dynamics of the evolving relationship with themselves and others.
Your mental health as a mother has taken a turn. You feel overwhelmed and overstimulated throughout the day. You are so much to everyone else that it often times is hard to remember who you are. You're constantly worried that something may happen to your baby or that you aren't doing enough as a mother. You knew motherhood would be hard but you didn't know the transition would come with so much anxiety or even depression. There are so many people around yet you feel alone in your experiences. You knew motherhood would be different but you weren't expecting this much change in your relationships, your personality, or your goals.

We're here to help you prepare for baby during pregnancy and, with transition after baby is born through individual, group, & family therapy.
Being a new mom is hard. You’re sleep deprived, learning your new little one, and everyone has advice for you. “Sleep when the baby sleeps; you’ll feel better, and happier, when you get a few more hours of sleep; It’s just the baby blues, you’ll be ok in a few weeks; the house work can get done later, make sure the baby is eating enough…” What if you’re still sad after “a few weeks”, you feel scared, anxious, or can't turn your thoughts off? It can start to feel like you are getting through each day in "survival mode". With the help of our knowledgeable counselors, you can stop "surviving" life and start enjoying it.

We welcome moms struggling with fertility or pregnancy loss concerns as these are sensitive experiences that often evoke feelings such as shame, guilt and depression.
Finally- A therapy practice JUST for moms! Being a mom at any stage can be hard. Pregnancy and the postpartum period can be an extremely emotional experience for moms. Many changes happen mentally and physically that can make this time period challenging. As many as 1 in 7 moms will experience a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD). PMAD can occur at any point from conception through postpartum, sometimes extending into a lengthy course of time if not treated. If you are a mom with these issues, you might feel alone, helpless and fearful of how to ask for help with PMADs.

It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions since you became a parent. From the anxiety you experienced when you first found out you were pregnant to the postpartum changes in mood. Now that the baby is here, you’re sleep-deprived, overwhelmed and struggling to recognize the person you’ve become overnight. You find yourself worrying about the smallest things, things you would have never thought of before and even the real housewives no longer bring you joy. Your mind feels foggy, and you keep wondering if it’s really possible to love your baby and still fantasize about a solo vacation.

I employ EMDR therapy to treat my first responder, caregiver, grief, trauma, and postpartum depression and anxiety clients.
Right now, you’re struggling to find purpose in your daily life — feeling overwhelmed by grief or other role demands. You need a warm, safe environment to explore patterns that are holding you back and find ways of moving forward. While it’s easier to hide from what is causing you pain, by taking action now you will begin to understand who you are and what you want out of life. Regardless if you are a student, a first responder, a new mom, a professional, or retired— you will learn new ways to cope with life — but most importantly learn to make positive changes toward greater life balance and acceptance, while creating meaning.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
