Why do we suffer? Because we fear. What do we fear? Rejection, loss, change, failure, humiliation, loneliness, abandonment. No, the world has not invented any new fears. How do we meet fear? We run, fight, hide, blame, push, control, cling, appease, numb ourselves, pity ourselves, play victim, play martyr, hoard security till we suffocate, lock parts of ourselves away and drag ourselves through our precious days for the sake of safety and appearances. No, we can never get enough of what we don’t really want. And the wheel of suffering turns again.
What we’re so afraid of is precisely what we’ve needed all this time. If we can face our fears, what would change? We might become students of life, we might become conductors of our various inner selves. Instead of forever tuning our instruments, and actually play: play the symphonies, the operas, the punk songs inside us all.
