I specialize in Substance Use Disorder (addiction), impact of Substance Use Disorder on the family system, Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder issues, depression, anxiety, and family dynamic issues.
Sick and tired of being sick and tired? Weary of feeling stuck? Desire a breakthrough? Seeking Serenity in your life? Are you, or someone you love, struggling with Substance Use Disorder or a Mental Health concern? The ideal client will be open, honest, willing and committed to the therapeutic process by not giving up when things get difficult. We don’t know what we don’t know so an openness to learning, implementing new skills, and viewing circumstances from a different vantage point (focusing on things that we can control and letting go of things we cannot control) are all critical points of growth and strength.

I have over a decade of experience working with individuals and loved ones whose lives have been impacted by substance use.
Since childhood, I have wanted to help people and families achieve peace in their lives. Having worked for my knowledge and experience, I wish to use it to do good in the world. I want to help you and your family flourish in your individual internal experiences of the world and also in your environments. Nothing means more to me as I believe the world can grow more beautiful with every person we help grow.

Seeking help from a mental health or addiction counselor can be a daunting task. Often times, individuals find themselves working with therapists who only give advice, teach how to breath, promote coloring in workbooks, and/or give homework assignments as a means to work on your presenting symptoms. With me, you will experience treatment in a different way. My name is Ryan Bowers and I am a professional counselor who practices traditional psychotherapy. This means that we will work on identifying core issues that are causing issues in your daily life, while creating goals that will help you be the best version of yourself.

The word itself says "I'm possible"- Audrey Hepburn Whether I am running a group, meeting one on one, teaching a yoga class, or engaging in a community event the goal is always the same. It is my desire to hold space for you, meeting you where you are at with a sense of compassion and humility. People choose to work with me toward healing of the whole self. Support may be offered for depression, anxiety, trauma associated with surgery, living with an addict or an alcoholic, moving through life transitions. I do this through conversation, breath-work, art, music, movement, & spiritual exploration.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
