Feel Better. Whether for depression, anxiety or relationship issues, the majority of the clients we see come to therapy with the goal of feeling better; happier, more connected to others, and free from the paralysis of emotional pain. Primarily psychodynamic and systems-oriented in approach, we look at how an issue experienced in the now came to be there, from early childhood experience to prior adult experiences, and how these all culminated in the present problem(s). We also utilize techniques to individually tailor treatment to the patient's needs, including cognitive/behavioral, problem-solving, and insight-oriented therapies, and often ..humor(!)

On the surface everything is “fine” but underneath is there an inner critic that rails against you all day? You want to unload your shame and anxiety, but not sure how? As an Asian-American therapist who sees the therapeutic relationship as a powerful instrument of change, I see therapy as a sacred site to bear witness to and support the whole person lingering in and around the thresholds of life. It’s a space where you are seen and accepted for who you are, where we can safely untangle generational wounds, shame, perfectionism, internalized invisibility, and find the courage to explore, learn, and tend to the messiness of life.

I am a licensed psychologist who enjoys working with all different kinds of people. I like to work on what gets in the way of optimum mental health. Much of my practice in the past almost thirty years has focused on relationships of all kinds, depression, self-esteem, conflict resolution, better communication, adult children of alcoholics, parenting, anxiety, chronic illness, addictions, and sexual abuse. I believe our work doesn't just happen in our therapy hour, but between sessions as well. I am committed to psychotherapy and helping people to change in a supportive atmosphere.

I am dedicated to helping each individual, couple or family find the keys to a happier and more satisfying life. To this end, I make a special effort to understand each person's dilemmas and what it would take to help them increase their experiences of joy and pleasure in their personal lives, one moment at a time. As the sources of pain emerge in therapy, I include each person's needs in the search for steps forward. My practice includes many individuals and couples who suffer from depression, anxiety, relationship distress, sexual dissatisfaction and the effects of past trauma.

You may be facing your first counseling experience or after years of working with other practitioners--willing to try again. When we first meet, I trust you will know you are safe and respected. I commit my full presence, deep interest, and willingness to be open to who you truly are. In other words, I am "teachable"--by you, for you and with you. And rather than fit you into a model, I will "learn and flex"--learn how you learn, change and grow and flex my skills, style and tools to find what works best for you.

People of all identities deserve mental health care that honors their whole, unique self. I enjoy working with LGBTQ+ individuals, neurodivergent folks, and gamers. My work is rooted in anti-racist, trans and queer-affirming, feminist, and social justice values. With warmth, compassion, and probably (...definitely) some metaphors from your favorite games, let's bring curiosity to where you are, where you want to get to, and how we can get there together. As a therapist I pull from lots of different modalities, and my favorites are IFS, trauma informed care, and psychodynamic psychotherapy.

In addition to my clinical training, I have a doctorate in philosophy with specialties in feminist and existential theory.
Therapy creates a space in which you can openly explore your thoughts and feelings, try out new ideas, and make sense of past and present within a safe and supportive relationship. I see it as a source of understanding and empowerment - it allows us to better know ourselves and also to be ourselves in the world more fully and freely. I work with a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety, existential concerns, complex trauma, relationship difficulties, issues related to gender and sexuality, life transitions, and challenges that arise in academia. I welcome starting from either more immediate or long-term concerns.

I utilize an eclectic, psychoanalytic, and relational approach while employing a strong racial justice, feminist, and queer theory lens. I practice from a fat-lib, sex-positive, and intersectional feminist perspective. I believe that one's past informs how they interact with and experience the world. Healing takes place as one fosters empathy and consideration for their past and present selves. The therapeutic relationship allows for gaining deeper perspective and understanding of oneself. I strive to build genuine and earnest rapport with my clients by being deeply nonjudgmental and always practicing with respect.

I am a pluralistic (integrative), client-centered, & humanistic therapist. I collaborate with clients, prioritize how they want to use the time & space in therapy, and help them to identify what kinds of support feel safe, comfortable & effective for them. I do not have an "ideal client". I love getting to connect with all kinds of people, exploring wide-ranging issues they want to focus on. When I work with folks with whom I share common identities/ lived experiences, that can be special & meaningful, but I've also had awesome experiences & successful outcomes when supporting clients who might seem quite "different" from me.

I believe that we have all had experiences that shape our sense of the world and impact our relationships with others. My approach to therapy involves exploring how past experiences impact the present and helping my clients use those insights to make active and healthy changes around their sense of self and in their relationships.

Are you feeling stuck? I help clients feel seen, understood and empowered to create change in their lives and relationships. I see my role in the therapeutic relationship as a catalyst to help increase awareness and trust to support freedom of expression, insight, and healing. In therapy sessions, I work in collaboration with individuals and couples to identify areas that are inhibiting quality of life and focus on building existing strengths and new skills. I believe that each individual is an expert in their own lives and has the strengths and potential to actualize the change they want to see.

I help adults (in NJ and PA) to make sense of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that result from a dysfunctional or traumatic childhood, and together we identify tools and skills to help you feel hopeful, empowered, and in control of your life. We will explore the source of triggers that cause you to react in ways that are ineffective, and find creative alternatives to encourage and empower you.

Anxiety is a pain. Struggling with self-doubt and constant worry can be overwhelming. My clients feel like they’re never quite 'good enough.' They compare themselves to others and constantly criticize themselves. These habits feel helpful in the moment, but leave them feeling stressed, tired, and overwhelmed. They might even feel like they can't shake their past mistakes or traumas. So much so, that they don't get the opportunity to fully enjoy the lives they've built for themselves or their relationships. My clients want to slow down and rest but are afraid that if they do, they'll fail.

Finding a therapist can be difficult and prioritizing yourself can be even harder. You may be seeking support for feeling overwhelmed, disorganized, or trying to balance too much at once. Or you may be like many people and experience guilt or shame because you think you aren't living up to personal or societal expectations. These all can effect how you feel about yourself, your work and your relationships. It's hard to know where to start and that's why I'm here. Therapy is a space where we can identify what it is you want from life and develop strategies to help you not only cope but also develop proactive ways to help you thrive.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
