My PhD is in Counselor Education and Supervision with a specialization in integrating religion and/or spirituality into counseling from the lens of the psychology of religion and spirituality.
Psychotherapy can bring light to darkness, hope to fear, and empowerment to stuck-places that weigh on us. I understand my role as your therapist as being a co-journeyer in your path through healing into a healthier, fulfilling life. My style focuses on reflective-empathetic listening to promote self-acceptance and awareness; cognitive flexibility and experimenting with new choices; and the affirmation of strengths. I have specialized experience with eating disorders, body image (HAES), and the effect of loved ones' addictions/alcoholism. I also value how culture, class, education, and power differences affect close relationships.

I have both personal & clinical experience in grief, trauma, anxiety and depression. Transitions I help clients work through include; break up/divorce, medical issues, civilian life, parenthood, retirement, family changes, loss of loved one, career changes, abuse, or past traumas. My goal in working with you is to hear your story, patiently help you make sense of your confusion and pain, help you create unique coping skills, and build a preferred life worth living. Years ago I worked with cancer patients and their families at a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit in South Carolina. Their situations were varied and complex, their physical and emotional pain was deep. As they talked about their pain, hopelessness, worthlessness, loss, anxiety, and uncertainty, together we made sense of their confusion. Likewise, as we work together, I will help you and your challenges in the same caring and skillful way.

You and your story matters to me! I have interests in the areas of parenting, life transitions, intergenerational work, spirituality, and family or relationship challenges.
Have you been stressed, sad, or hopeless about patterns in your most important relationships? It makes sense if you are struggling; humans are made to be close to loved ones, not disconnected! I work with parents, teens, and any aged adult that is having challenges because of issues in their marriage, family, school, work, or friendships. I encourage clients to work out relational patterns or cycles and gain more support where you need it- your natural environments. My goal is that we can co-discover more healthy relational dynamics so you need to talk with a therapist less and can lean on your natural supports more!

Life is hard. It doesn't come with instructions. Sometimes it feels like you're on a roller coaster ride. If you are feeling the need to stop the ride and get off, let's work together to help you get back on solid ground. I believe that building trust and being comfortable are essential to the therapeutic relationship and will work to ensure that a safe space is created to allow you to do the work you need to do.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
