Over the course of my career I've worked with individuals, couples, families, and teens to address a breadth of mental health needs from severe mood disorders to general wellness and stress management.
Open and Accepting New Clients. My name is Craig Gabel, the owner of Cairn Wellness, a new practice in State College. I've been working as a mental health therapist for 9 years and have a total of 17 years experience working in human services. I specialize in working with anxiety, trauma, and grief and loss. However, I am comfortable and experienced in working with most concerns clients bring to therapy.

I have specialized training in treatments for trauma and PTSD (including dissociation), OCD, anxiety, depression, and couples counseling.
Welcome to my practice. No matter what circumstances have led you here, I hope to provide a safe place for you to explore, heal, and grow. Maybe life has presented some new challenges for you and you need to grow to meet those challenges. Maybe anxiety, depression, or some other experience seems to have hijacked your life and you want some guidance. Maybe your relationship isn't going the way you hoped and you wonder if there is a better way. Counseling is a tool for getting yourself into a healthier happier place.

I see psychotherapy as a psycho-educational experience where you learn about yourself. This counseling process of self-exploration leads to understanding self-defeating thinking and behaviors that may keep you from actualizing potential for successful relationships, success in business and career and from having a really happy life. During the years since I have been a licensed psychologist, I have had the privilege of helping many individuals and couples to achieve a happier, emotionally healthier, and financially successful life. My patients describe me as being a no nonsense person, while at the same time being warm and comfortable.

Licensed in mental health and couples & family therapy in both Florida and Pennsylvania, my therapeutic approach is person-centered, insight-oriented, and eclectic, integrating multiple types of therapy, tailored to the client.
A healer does not heal you. A healer is someone who holds space for you while you awaken your inner healer, so that you may heal yourself (Maryam Hasnaa). I enjoy working with individuals, couples, families, and professionals who are motivated to work with an experienced therapist to more deeply understand, heal, grow, and feel at home with themselves and in their relationships. I believe in providing a safe, private, open-minded, non-judgmental, and collaborative environment for my clients to explore themselves and commit to personally meaningful change.

For some of us, our ability to maintain a loving, empowered relationship with ourselves can be more challenging due to circumstance, our mental health (or lack thereof), and events that may have happened to us. Perhaps this shows up as struggling to show up for ourselves in ways we do for others. For many, when we feel like our potential is different than our reality, we may turn against ourselves.

Some of my focuses include issues related to depression, anxiety, troubles finding or staying in a relationship, perfectionism, self-harm behavior, and parent/child relationship ruptures.
Your experience is worthy of exploration and I believe that we all benefit from a protected space to journey through our history, needs, thoughts, and wishes around who we've been and who we want to be. I'm also familiar with the many ways that we can feel prohibited from giving ourselves such a space.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
