I specialize in working with those who are struggling with life transitions, trauma/PTSD, relationship issues, loss and grief, terminal illness, infidelity, abuse, chronic pain, spiritual pain, codependency, loneliness, depression and anxiety.
I am a L.P.C. with a MS degree in Pastoral Care and Counseling. I believe that it is helpful to bring your spiritual beliefs into the healing process. Starting psychotherapy is the beginning of feeling at home with yourself. It is a place where you can feel safe, grounded and secure, as you explore the difficult areas in your life that you may not want to face alone. Therapy can help you identify unhealthy thinking, and break destructive patterns, so you can make better choices. It also helps you to discover your own inner strengths that can bring deeper healings from within. We are all a work in progress!

In current times, we are experiencing much grief and loss in our lives.
Life's ups and downs are sometimes overwhelming and can impact one's mental and physical state. In a safe space, I gently challenge clients to work on becoming more self-aware, so they can break unhealthy patterns which affect how we see ourselves and others.

Our wounds, losses, and trauma can trap us in painful patterns of avoidance, anger, fear, sadness, guilt, and shame.
Whether you are coming to therapy for anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, a life change, or just a general sense of unease, facing these issues can be scary. Healing isn’t easy because it involves confronting our pain and hurts. Healing can also be full of joy, hope, connection, and freedom as we experience new possibilities of being and relating. My approach is warm, relational, and integrative. I strive to offer a space where you can feel safe enough to look inward – to gently and compassionately welcome all parts of yourself with less judgment and shame.

My ideal client would be aware that they need help. They are also prepared and open to doing the necessary work to address their issue. I most enjoy helping others build a strong internal relationship that fosters self-trust and confidence in all that you encounter throughout your life. Some topics I enjoy working on with clients most: understanding core beliefs, values, and limitations; grief and loss; relationships and sex (I work with individuals and couples); as well as binge eating and how to reconnect with the body. I take a very relational and modern approach to therapy. You should feel like you're talking to a REAL person, someone with an actual personality and feedback – not someone robotically nodding.

What if your best life is just a phone call away? What would you be willing to do??? Don't let guilt, shame, heart aches, or betrayal hold you back any longer. Live long enough and you or someone you know can experience any of these issues. Experiencing any of these circumstances can leave you feeling loss, helpless, hopeless and stuck. Unresolved hurts from our past or present can keep us trapped or disillusioned that life can never get better. My name is Valerie Latney and I would be honored to journey with you into well being.

Women in postpartum, dealing with infertility, raising a family while trying to balance everything else life brings, women with unprocessed traumas, grief, etc.
Ever have the feeling as if you are just going through the motions of your life, or waiting for the day to be over so you can go to sleep, just to wake up and do it all over again? Are you tired of the "hamster wheel" constantly spinning, wondering how on earth you are supposed to incorporate self-care along with everything else you are responsible for? As women, we have so many pressures and expectations placed on us that are often unrealistic. This leads to burn out and feels like we are living our lives for everyone else except ourselves.

Grief Therapists
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
