Interpersonal therapy is a highly effective approach that targets problems in relationships (past and present) that influence how you feel about yourself and others now.
Do you have symptoms that "make no sense," or "come out of the blue?" Are you having trouble understanding why you feel the way you do? I specialize in helping people make sense of experiences that are painful, confusing, or "illogical." I start with the assumption that all feelings are messages to you, from you, about you. Together, we will work to understand these messages, using them to guide the process of change.

It's hard to know what to write for these kinds of things. I'm being asked to write about my ideal client, which makes sense in theory, but I have a lot of ideal clients. When someone comes in to see me, they are my focus- I want to listen and get involved in your world. My counseling style is authentic and genuine- my primary belief is that the counseling experience is successful because of relational connection. I do not use CBT or any structured approach, and that is because I strongly believe that there is not one perfect way to do therapy with anyone.

Feeling stuck? Life can be hard sometimes. I offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a psychotherapy that, unlike traditional talk-therapy, enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. As an EMDR trained therapist, I provide EMDR therapy to all ages to address stuck memories and help to reorganize past thoughts, feelings and memories that are related to a traumatic event that can oftentimes keep us hooked or stuck from moving forward in work & relationships, preventing us living our best lives. You are worth it and you ARE capable of healing!

My mission is to provide a welcoming space for people to work on their individual goals. This can look different for everyone. For some, it's working through life changes or challenging situations. For others, they are on a journey to identify who they are and what they want in life. I believe everyone has the ability to make changes and discover things about themselves that will allow them to live the life they want. My focus is to provide a place for people to explore and learn while feeling accepted and supported.

I can guide you through learning skills (emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance) with DBT or work to help process your trauma with EMDR or classical talk therapy.
Therapy to me is a cooperative process, one in which I work with someone to both accept themselves and to change. Ideally, that person would be open and honest and willing to work towards that change. I see teens and adults with anxiety, depression and other mood disorders as well as those struggling with psychosis. I specialize in processing trauma through developing a narrative and/or EMDR (eye movement desensitizing and reprocessing therapy).

If you're struggling with anxiety, depression, self-esteem concerns, eating disorders, addiction, trauma, etc art therapy can be just the thing to help. So, what is art therapy? The fancy definition is it’s a mental health profession that combines applied psychology with the creative process to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals. But art therapy helps clients to not only reduce stress levels and offer mindfulness techniques, but allows individuals to explore difficult feelings, resolve conflicts, develop interpersonal skills, achieve insight, manage behaviors, and increase self esteem.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
