I believe we are all on a journey to find happiness, purpose, and meaning in life. While the route is not always clear, I am dedicated to helping my clients sort out where they are, and get them to where they’re going. I have experience with clients of all ages with diverse presenting concerns and I modify my treatment modality to meet the unique needs of each person. Working with adolescents and young adults, LGBTQIA folks, and individuals struggling with anxiety, social skills and communication are particular passions of mine.

"Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary" (Fred Rogers). Taking care of your mental health is often the hardest but most valuable work you’ll ever do. I work with children, adolescents, and adults who are struggling to express themselves in healthy or effective ways, who have been through painful experiences, or who need to find new ways to cope.

We live in a world that caters to the neurotypical person, and you are really starting to feel the impact of that after years of working against it. You've tried so hard to "fit in" and hold yourself to the same standard as those around you, but you keep "failing". And all it's done is filled you with shame and left you feeling even more exhausted. Your multiple intersecting identities make this even more difficult, and sometimes you're not sure what's actually impacting things the most and where to start. You need a safe space to really dive in, and that in and of itself has been so difficult to find.

You're here. That takes courage. The next step might take even more. Our life experiences can lead us to doubt ourselves, delay important decisions, and avoid taking steps we know, at our cores, offer us an opportunity to set a more hopeful path forward. I hear you and I want you to know that even though I don't know you yet, I care about you. I care about what brought you here. I care about what happens next. I can be here to support you when your anxious thoughts make you afraid, when your sadness feels paralyzing, or when you feel alone with all of these overwhelming, but very human emotions. Today is an opportunity.

My approach is rooted in creating a compassionate space where individuals can explore their inner selves, fostering self-awareness and illuminating the path towards light, happiness, and therapeutic change. DBT, CBT, IPSRT, MI, CFT, CPT; tailed to you!.. You know that saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” Well, I challenge that! Let’s live a life where we are mindful of both the good and not-so-good times, solution-focused instead of problem-focused, and where we can be content and satisfied, as a minimum! A life where even if there are storm clouds, we know how to make a few rainbows of our own until the sun comes out again.

I specialize in adolescent and adult counseling for those coping with trauma, anxiety, parenting stress, cancer treatment or survival of cancer, and adult insecure attachment. I have over 5 years of experience working in human services and received my Master of Science in Professional Counseling from Carlow University. I believe everyone is shaped by their past, but the past can sometimes come to haunt you. Arriving at a place of peace often involves reprocessing those past painful memories and facing the negative messages that those experiences told you about yourself.

I enjoy helping people to live in wellness and wholeness. I think the therapy relationship is critical to being able to work as a team to accomplish that. I always hope to collaborate with my clients to set therapy goals and design a plan to achieve them. My focus is on providing a therapy setting in which people can learn new skills to cope with difficulties, recover from trauma, adjust to life's challenges, and improve their functioning. I approach therapy from a cognitive-behavioral perspective but use other approaches as needed to assist clients to reach their goals.

I enjoy working with children, adolescents, families, and adults (preschool-age 80+). I am fortunate to have helped individuals over the past 20+ years as they strive to overcome life's challenges and access life's joys. While a variety of therapy techniques that I am trained in can be of value, clients and I select the ones that they find to be most helpful to them personally. I primarily see clients who are experiencing depression, anxiety, divorce, school/work and family problems, ADHD, Autism, childhood issues, and processing past traumatic or stressful life events.

I’m excited to develop resources for those seeking guidance in areas like sex counseling, infidelity, open relationships, depression, anxiety, and various individual, family, and couple dynamics. Many people tend to push sex-related topics aside due to discomfort about sharing desires and fantasies, uncertainty about how to communicate openly about sexual issues, and fear of judgment or misunderstanding. Interpersonal challenges and communication barriers can hinder a healthy relationship with oneself and others. Cultivating comfort in directly addressing these thoughts and concerns is a valuable tool for enhancing mental health.

Cognitive Processing (CPT) Therapists

How does cognitive processing therapy work?

A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.

What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?

Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.

How long does cognitive processing therapy last?

CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.

How effective is cognitive processing therapy?

A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
