Trauma, fear, and negative thinking patterns squelch self-confidence and potential.
Psychotherapy isn't just about relieving suffering; it's also about growth. Sometimes it takes the assistance of an empathic listener to rediscover your own inner resources and to understand yourself and others more deeply. Tell me about yourself and I'll share my observations. Together we can discover what it is that holds you back from the life that you want. Whatever the impediment, I will encourage you to examine your life with honesty while we work on cultivating acceptance and compassion. Caring for oneself is at the core of the healing process.

Suppose you returned home one night to your "empty" house on a corner to find the door smashed open, and sounds of someone inside and things falling on the floor. Afraid, you walk around the corner where your neighbor then tells you she saw smoke coming from your window and the firemen are inside finding the cause. Your attitude toward the intruders completely changes when you understand their purpose. I give clients similar insight about the problems hurting them and their relationships. It's tragic to suffer and to fear solvable problems because you don't understand them.

It is through my experiences there of personal and societal trauma that compelled me to work with trauma survivors.
Please note that I work only with clients in California at this time. Often, when we connect with therapists, we present with clear issues we want to address. Other times, we could be struggling to interpret how a life event may be affecting us. When I work with a client, I like to know and understand that person deeply, including where they feel they are now in life, and how is it they got here, to this point. We will delve into moments in your earlier life that you believe may hold some importance, some current relevance, what I term the echo of our pasts. It is this exploration that makes therapy both enlightening and releasing.

Megan specializes in working with those struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD/Autism, and adjustment difficulties.
At Pause Counseling Services, the aim is just that - to give you the chance to take a pause in your day and focus on healing and meeting your own needs. The demands of life often force us to ignore or suppress our struggles. This can be a place where those external demands get momentarily shut down and you can feel free to explore your own wants, needs, and goals. Megan offers traditional, individual therapeutic sessions; but also specializes in Geek Therapeutics for individuals who want to incorporate their hobbies and interests into the counseling process using evidence-based methods in either individual or group sessions.

I have a passion for working with those who feel lost, stressed, or weighed down by anxiety. I love exploring meaning behind both the big and small moments in life, and discovering how my clients can use that meaning to propel themselves forward. I use my knowledge of psychology and neuroscience to help clients understand the source of their anxiety and stress, and my background in religious studies for clients who want to be propelled by their spirituality. My goal is for my clients to walk away with a better understanding of where they feelings come from, and how to reign them in.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
