I'm happy you are here and ready to explore your relationship with food and body image. You can spend years repeating a damaging cycle of restricting food, binging and feeling shame and guilt. It's distressing, exhausting and robs you of joy. I help clients break the cycle, explore emotions around food and find peace with their bodies. I also help clients improve relationships, communication and boundaries and explore their strengths and values. My training in CBT-E targets the diet cycle, helps you reduce/stop binges and helps to change your mindset to include abundance, flexible eating and compassionate self talk.

I utilize an eclectic, psychoanalytic, and relational approach while employing a strong racial justice, feminist, and queer theory lens. I practice from a fat-lib, sex-positive, and intersectional feminist perspective. I believe that one's past informs how they interact with and experience the world. While other programs claim to be 'trauma-informed', our practice revolves entirely around trauma therapy. This is what we do best. The Phoenix Center for Experiential Trauma Therapy is named after the legendary figure of the phoenix that dies and is reborn from its own ashes – it is a symbol of transformation, resilience, and growth after trauma. While we cannot change the past, we can change how past experiences live within us! Sessions range from $200-125 with our therapists. Low-cost therapy sessions with our graduate interns range from $85-30.

I provide therapy for adults, children, families, and couples. Many people come to see me because they are feeling stuck, experiencing relationship difficulties , or are worried about their child's behavior or mood. I believe that although individuals and families have different values, beliefs, and struggles, when we learn to communicate about difficult things, we can begin to understand one another better. Learning to do this helps individuals and families grow together through life's transitions and challenges.

What is your story? It's common to have a running narrative about who you are in this world. We use certain words to describe ourselves, like “I’m too shy.” “I’m an anxious person.” “I’m not good enough.” While these stories are based on real experiences, they can also hold power over our self-esteem, our decision-making, and our relationships. In therapy, we will work to understand yourself in new ways that feel more accepting, empowering and expansive.

Starting your day is exhausting. Can’t believe how hard you’re working and yet how far away from the goals you still are. Trying to be everything for everyone, the best version of yourself that you can be, trying to be just good enough. If you ever told yourself “If I could just (blank), then everything would be okay.” The truth is we need to stop doing it for them, and start doing it for you. The emotional freedom that comes with prioritizing yourself is unmatched. Finally–feelings of calmness, confidence, caring less what others think, feeling proud of yourself–without any conditions! These are the things you undeniably deserve.

I specialize in working with clients from the ages of 14 to adulthood, who are inquisitive, self-aware, and deeply motivated to understand themselves better, improve their relationships, move into a place of self-respect/love, and develop adaptive ways of coping, communicating, and problem-solving. I have worked for many years with children, teens, adults, and families dealing with trauma and change and searching for authenticity, often in a world that values the superficial. Therapy is a process of seeking meaning, managing change, letting go of what no longer makes sense for who we are and what we want, healing, and growing.

Feminist Therapists
How does feminist therapy work?
Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.
What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?
Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.
How long does feminist therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.
Does feminist therapy work?
As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
