I use psychoeducation to help clients understand the ways in which their family dynamics have shaped the way they build relationships.
Are you dealing with life transitions and trying to find yourself? Are you trying to break the cycle and begin the process of learning to be vulnerable and self-reflect? Are you committed to “showing up”? You may have difficulty finding independence in your unhealthy family dynamics and are working on finding a sense of self outside your relationships. You have dealt with anxiety and negative thoughts and no longer want these issues to hold you back.

I use systematic exposure and mindfulness approaches to validate emotions and improve family well-being.
Did you know autism can be diagnosed in children as young as 14 months of age? So often parents are told to "wait and see" despite having concerns about their child's development. As a child psychologist, I have expertise in the early diagnosis and intervention of autism. I have over a decade of experience conducting gold-standard evaluations for autism and research to advance knowledge about early autism signs with over 25 peer-reviewed publications/book chapters. I offer both diagnosis and intervention services for families of young children via telehealth throughout the country (select states). Contact me for a FREE consult!

My specialty areas include trauma-informed care, mental health well-being, substance use disorders, and marriage & family counseling.
When people feel weighed down by the heaviness that seems to consume them, providing a sense of space and reconstruction that allows a shift to occur is vital. In that shift, I hope to provide a supportive environment where they will feel that weight move and become the foundation on which they can rebuild their life. This heaviness is a unilateral condition experienced by all human beings. The secret is to create a skillset that permits the transition from weight being carried to weight being conquered. In my opinion, there is no ideal client, however, there is a blueprint of individual success for everyone.

Some of the life challenges I have worked with the most include: ADHD, depression, anxiety, trauma, and family related issues.
Have you ever thought, "I don't want them to judge me." Maybe this is your roadblock from exploring the pain caused by the experiences you've had in life. It's something that I have heard many times in my role as a therapist. The reality is that I am not only not in a position to judge, but it is nothing short of an honor to be the one that gets to sit across from anyone who takes the courageous step to explore their trauma. I have experienced the weight of a person verbalizing a trauma for the first time and I would be honored to have that moment with you.

Become the best version of you. When we become complacent and just “settle”, we have cut off our opportunity for happiness. We understand that each client that we work with is a unique individual who has been and continues to be influenced by their culture, family, friends, values, beliefs, and personal traits. Treatment first begins with clearly understanding you, as a unique individual, and then identifying the goals in which you wish to achieve, followed by developing a treatment plan based on those individualized goals.

When I am not in sessions, you can most often find me spending time with my family and (badly behaved, but lovable!) dog, reading on my porch, and putzing around in my garden.
I believe that every person has the ability to find meaning and purpose, and it is my goal to help you tap into your innate strengths to do so. My style of therapy is warm, nonjudgmental, and tailored to each client’s individual goals and needs. I use a person-centered and strengths-based approach, often incorporating elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and psychodynamics.

Although I employ an eclectic mix of counseling theories, I lean toward family systems using the genogram as the foundational guide.
We live such hectic and often overwhelming lives that counseling provides us the opportunity to check out, even if only for a moment. Granting individuals a listening ear and a compassionate empathetic response is my specialty. My ultimate goal is to build healthy individuals and families by developing the therapeutic tool box filled with practices that bring calm to chaos. We must look to our foundation and past experiences in order to create a plan for healing and future success. With that, much of our work will involve delving deep into Family of Origin issues in order to create healthy new norms and patterns.

I concentrated in individual therapy in graduate school and participated in extensive post graduate training in couples and family therapy.
I operate with the assumption that happiness and well being is contingent on good relations with others and a healthy regard for ourselves. Most problems presented in counseling can be understood as disconnection, an inability to embrace ourselves or the people around us. Therapy can be a means of reestablishing meaningful connections by addressing the obstacles that thwart us. These obstacles can take many forms, such as excessive fear, unresolved childhood injuries, stalemated conflicts, distorted beliefs, insecurities, depression or addictions. I have found that therapeutic conversations are a very effective means for overcoming the obstacles to connection, meaning and happiness.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
