I heal by combining cutting-edge science with perennial truth.
My first goal when working with a client is to create a space of absolute safety, a space where people feel at ease to share the fullness of their suffering, to share their hopes and their dreams. I use a whole-person approach and learn not just about a person’s pain but also about their strengths and their vision for a better future. Together, my clients and I create a healing field that allows their deepest knowledge to flower. We transform confusion into clarity and habitual patterns into fresh action arising out of wisdom.

Making the decision to begin psychotherapy can be difficult. "Am I really crazy?", "My parents want me to go" or "The last time I went it was useless," are typical obstacles that prevent someone from scheduling the first session. Therapy is making the first step towards improved self awareness. I point out to clients that therapy becomes a weekly safe place, away from their busy schedules, to focus solely on yourself. When this happens people are often surprised at what they discover.

I have helped people with grief and loss, past abuse, anxiety, depression, self-harm like cutting or picking, overwhelming emotions, health, illness and aging, being human in this crazy world!.
You made it here! Getting to the point where you finally make a connection and start feeling some relief from your burdens, it's a lot. If you schedule with me, you will find that I'm an open, honest person who creates a warm, safe space for you to explore anything and everything that brought you here. I help people untangle their suffering from their daily lives.

I believe we all carry a wealth of past experiences, and that this often involves old or unhealed wounds. Sometimes this presents as feelings of disconnection, depression, racing thoughts or anxiety, sometimes as substance use, self-harming behavior, or relationship problems. Wherever you are at, I will work to build a relationship together which we can use to explore your life and where you are now with the goal of moving forward and growing in whatever ways you want. The therapist-client relationship is something I value deeply.

There have been a lot of changes in the past two years. With those changes, I have witnessed an increase in depression and anxiety of those around me. If this describes you, I am here to help. I am available to help anyone who is looking to increase their coping skills and get back to enjoying their lives. I utilize evidenced-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to address how someone's thoughts are interfering with achieving their goals. We set small, baby steps each week to work towards obtaining their treatment goal, and will evaluate barriers to their success.

I have much experience helping people who suffer serious symptoms such as cutting and suicidal ideation resolve their conflicts, learn new problem-solving and coping skills, and enhance self-esteem.
I see problems as opportunities to grow whether I am working with a child, adolescent or adult, individually or in couples or family therapy, and whether it is a single symptom or incident, or long-standing difficulty that brings someone to therapy. I identify and help develop strengths as we explore and change thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and relationship patterns, and resolve difficulties that prevent someone from reaching their goals and creating a fulfilling life. My work with children involves helping them reach the appropriate developmental goals as they build the skills needed for life ahead.

Hi, I'm Des! I'm a social worker and suicidologist, and a queer, white, cisgender single parent. My practice is trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and person-centered. Using an eclectic approach, mainly rooted in relational and attachment-based work, alongside some CBT techniques and DBT skills training, I work with teens and adults experiencing suicidal ideation and self-injury, grief/traumatic loss, ADHD, depression, anxiety, mood and personality disorders, fertility challenges (especially for those who are visibly queer), queer family-building, and pregnancy loss—many of which I have personal experience with.

Today's life struggles are much different than yesterdays. On top of average everyday obstacles of navigating a busy life, raising a family, and making ends meet, were faced with political tensions, health concerns, and morals/values that we've never thought of before. Amongst all these stressors, I relate and empathize with this journey were on together. I enjoy helping today's transition-aged youth (late teen to early adult) learn to slow down in the midst of society's business, learn to enjoy this journey, find meaning in their experiences and find their way through life's difficulties, relationships and career paths.

During the last 10 years as a therapist, clinical supervisor, and executive clinical director, I’ve worked with individuals who struggle to function in their everyday lives due to their mental health. For some, they make it look like they have it all together. For others, they are back and forth between hospitals or jails. You may find yourself in one of these circumstances or somewhere in between. Regardless, you deserve a life worth living.

If you found me, then I know you're doing your best to support your teenager or the teenager in your life through challenging circumstances. You've found the right therapist to help you to support them. I'm also going to help keep your teen navigate their experiences to learn skills to help them cope and manage their emotional wellness. With so many touchpoints, I believe it is critical to help teenagers create an informed decision-making self-compass to avoid self-inflicted harm, which can include self-mutilation, isolation, suicidal thoughts, and more.

I wholeheartedly believe and trust that each person is uniquely resilient and has the capacity to heal from trauma. As a therapist, my passion lies in helping people regain safety and security in their mind and body after experiencing trauma. In treatment, I will support you in rebuilding authentic relationships to yourself, others, and the world around you. Much of my experience entails working with physical and sexual trauma, grief, racial trauma, and relationship challenges. In my practice, I primarily work with female-identifying people of color.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
