As a certified anxiety therapist, I have extensive training using the most effective treatment models for anxiety which are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure Response Prevention Therapy ( ERP).
Hello! My name is Kara and I specialize in working with individuals who have anxiety disorders. Anxiety comes in many forms. Whether it's panic attacks, social anxiety, intrusive thoughts, phobias or just generally being in a constant state of worry, it's all overwhelming. Anxiety keeps us stuck. It prevents us from going after the things we want and doing the things we love. However, when using the right tools, you can find relief and start living your life according to you – not your anxiety.

We have received intensive training in Exposure Response and Prevention Therapy ( ERP), the gold standard treatment for OCD.
My love of psychology started with the personality tests you could find in the back of teen magazines. I've always loved supporting others while they work toward their goals, celebrating each and every victory along the way. OCD is often misunderstood and mistreated. When I learned that, on average, it takes 17 years for someone to be accurately diagnosed with OCD, I knew I was in the right place to utilize my clinical skillset and advocacy skills. At NOCD, my team and I specialize in providing evidence-based treatment for OCD. Our deep understanding of its nuances enables us to properly diagnose and treat it.

We have received training in evidence-based treatments, including Exposure Response and Prevention ( ERP) therapy—the gold standard treatment for OCD.
I approach OCD treatment with compassion and respect. You are not alone. You are not defective. OCD is not what is wrong with you. The focus is on what happened to you and finding the solution to what you're struggling with. There is hope. Therapy may not be easy, but it is worthwhile. I will keep you informed with honesty and directness. At NOCD, my team and I provide personalized and effective specialized treatment for OCD and related conditions, such as BFRBs (including skin-picking, nail-biting, and hair-pulling). Our understanding of the nuances of these conditions enables us to diagnose and treat them properly.

Mary's primary modalities are Internal Family Systems (IFS Level 1), cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), and exposure and response prevention ( ERP).
Therapy is useful if you find that your thoughts or emotions are getting in the way of enjoying your life. For some, this means uncomfortable feelings are limiting their ability to fully engage in activities, relationships, and work. For others, thoughts of the past or future might be distracting or distressing. Other people may look to the outside world like they are doing well, but internally they feel they are struggling or that they are not reaching their potential.

I use evidence-based practices, such as CBT and ERP, to help you understand your anxiety and/or OCD and learn how to manage it more effectively.
Are you drowning in a sea of anxious "what ifs"? Is fear holding you back from connecting with the joy in your life? If so, you're not alone. Unmanaged anxiety and OCD can be incredibly painful. But there is hope. By learning to manage the thoughts and behaviors that p erpetuate this pain, you can break free and experience true freedom. Freedom to live a life that's more present and fulfilling, where you can make choices based on what you want, not what you fear.

My training has been focused in the areas of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention ( ERP), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness.
I view therapy as a collaborative process and will work with you to identify appropriate goals, customize the treatment plan to fit your needs, and meet you where you are. I can flexibly implement evidence-based treatments to effect real, measurable change in your life based on therapeutic approaches that have known efficacy in the community. One of the most critical pieces of therapy is a strong therapeutic alliance so it is important to me to hear from you about your experience in therapy, what your strengths are and what makes your life worth living.

The type of therapy I do is exposure and response prevention ( ERP).
Are your OCD symptoms affecting the way you live your life? Do you think you have OCD, but haven't found treatment that seems to work for you yet? Struggling with intrusive thoughts and anxiety that feels unmanaged is really hard, and can be debilitating for some. Unfortunately there are many people living with OCD that live with their symptoms for years and years before they receive a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

I utilize exposure and response prevention therapy ( ERP), the gold standard for OCD treatment, to help you tackle fears and live a more value-driven life.
Are you and your partner feeling trapped in a cycle of repetitive arguments, struggling to find common ground, or experiencing difficulties with intimacy that leave you both feeling disconnected? Are past traumas or unresolved issues getting in the way of your ability to be vulnerable and authentic with each other? If you find yourselves feeling stuck, know that you're not alone. I provide a compassionate and supportive environment free of judgment where you can explore your relationship dynamics, enhance communication skills, and cultivate deeper trust and understanding.

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapists

Do I need exposure and response prevention therapy?

Many clients decide to seek help for obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors when these symptoms are distressing enough to disrupt everyday life. Any thoughts or behaviors that cause friction in close relationships are also worth addressing. In addition, the client’s symptoms don’t have to be severe for them to benefit from ERP therapy.

Is exposure and response prevention therapy part of cognitive behavioral therapy?

Exposure and response prevention is one specific type of CBT that focuses on behavioral change in response to triggering stimuli. It is related to exposure therapy but adds an additional component of preventing compulsive and harmful responses.

How long does exposure and response prevention therapy take?

While every patient is different, exposure and response prevention therapy typically lasts around 12 sessions, although some treatments can take longer. A therapist will determine if the treatment is complete based on how the client faces their fears, particularly the strongest ones. When a client feels less anxiety about stimuli that once evoked terror or distress, that is generally an indication that they are nearing the end of ERP therapy.

What are the limitations of exposure and response prevention therapy?

The most common pitfalls of exposure and response prevention therapy include not addressing a client’s core fears, allowing the client to avoid their most distressing stimuli, and using imaginary exposure when the client requires real-life exposure (and vice versa). ERP therapy is most effective when the client commits to the full course of treatment; if the client stops early or doesn’t practice what they have learned outside of therapy sessions, they are less likely to have successful outcomes.
