My ideal client is someone who is self-aware and dedicated, often putting others' needs before their own. They might be a helping professional, such as a fellow therapist, first responder, or educator, or someone facing significant life transitions and stressors. They are grappling with issues such as trauma, anxiety, relationship challenges, or chronic illness, and they are seeking a space to process these experiences and find a path forward. Their goals are to build resilience, improve their relationships, and develop effective coping strategies to navigate their life that comes with inevitable future stressors.

My experience working within both acute and ambulatory care medical settings has also expanded my expertise to include helping those coping with chronic illness, grief/loss, and end of life issues.
Everyone needs support during difficult times in their lives, whether they are dealing with relationship issues, stress at home or work, or feelings of depression and anxiety with or without a clear cause. It is during times like these that therapy can help. Through our work together I will provide a safe space for painful memories and emotions to be explored and work with you to gain a deeper understanding of how these experiences continue to shape you today. Together we will work to help you develop new coping skills and bring an enhanced level of self-awareness to your life.

Everything we experience in this universe is a relationship. We can move through so much of our life out of alignment with our highest and truest self. This can lead to experiencing confusion, frustrated emotions, a dysregulated nervous system, and all kinds of mental health symptoms. The work we do together is to shine light and awareness on how you are experiencing life and your relationship to yourself, those around you, and everything in between. Cultivating awareness allows us to see where our past and present beliefs or traumas are limiting us from experiencing a full life of more harmony and ease.

This loss knocked the wind out of you. You tell the world “I’m fine” but there is a part of you that knows you’re not. Intense sorrow invades everything you do. The stress to get through, to be strong, to not let others down, is immense—you're exhausted. Just last week you felt some relief for a brief moment, a flash of hope. Just as quickly it dissolved and you’re preoccupied with searing bleakness—again. It’s not too much to want a break from this unwanted & relentless heartache, and find a place of emotional rest. It’s not too much to really know that this will end & that there is a way in and through. Trust that you can do this.

Hi! I am Dr. Caryn. I am a licensed health psychologist and Duke trained health coach with over 20 years of experience working with patients with chronic health conditions like chronic pain, migraine, autoimmune, diabetes/pre-diabetes, and sleep problems. As a health psychologist, I work at the intersection of physical health and mental health (because it’s all related!) and treat both using the best of mind/body medicine. My typical client is sick of feeling sick and unsupported by the healthcare system They want to feel successful and in control of their health so they can break out of the never ending cycle of (dis)ease.

If you're scrolling through these pages, something in life has pushed you to decide to seek support. Maybe you're a new parent, struggling to process recent birth trauma while also figuring out how to take care of the new little life in your arms. Perhaps you've been able to manage symptoms of ADHD well enough until recently, and suddenly the overwhelm and executive dysfunction is becoming too much of a challenge to navigate alone. Anxiety, ADHD, depression, postpartum and parenting...all of these can lead us to feel isolated and alone sometimes, struggling to figure out how to cope. You don't have to figure it out alone; welcome!

Change can be daunting. Wanting to be better – or do better – is not enough. We must understand what stands in the way, what obstacles must be overcome in order to initiate – and, more importantly, to maintain – change. I’m here to help.

A wise man once told me, “Life is like a circle, at different points on the circumference we view the same core.” This reminded of therapy. How at different points on the circumference of our lives, different transitions, losses, relationship issues, or medical issues introduce themselves and we view how our core responds. Sometimes depression, anxiety, anger, and fear arise. We can continue to look away and ignore these responses that interfere with our goals, or we can decide we are going to work with a therapist. Together we embrace that core in ways that help and enrich each point on the circumference.

In working together, you will receive a warm, supportive, and non-judgmental environment to unpack your fears, concerns, and worries. I have worked in various settings with various populations; no need to be embarrassed, ashamed, or worried of anything you might share. I'm here with you through it all and will provide you with understanding, reassurance, and encouragement. My work with a wide range of clients, and my personal struggle with chronic health issues, gives me a special understanding for others who may be experiencing loss, trauma, depression, anxiety, fear, adjustment issues, and relationship challenges.

As someone who has struggled with anxiety and a highly sensitive nervous system, I know how important it is to learn as much about yourself as you can so you can understand what coping mechanisms work for you. I want to help you explore new ways to see your life and help you alleviate and heal your emotional suffering. In a safe space to share your true self, you can begin your journey toward optimal living. There is so much healing that comes from simply being able to speak your truth. Words have power, especially when said out loud.

Are you struggling to live authentically, to trust your ability to make healthy decisions, or to develop a sense of self and your desires? Perhaps you are grappling with life transitions, relationship conflict, feeling unfulfilled, gender/sexual identity concerns, or a disability. Maybe you're just looking to grow! The systems we have been raised in aren't always friendly to those of who are unconventional (whether we identify as misfits, creatives, disabled, or LGBTQIA+), and the therapeutic process is an opportunity to be uniquely listened to in a way we rarely find in everyday life.
