If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, or something else that you can't even articulate, please know that it can get better.
Are you struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, and/or addiction? My ideal client is open to gaining insight into behavior patterns and problematic coping skills. I am kind & non-judgmental, but not afraid to give clients a little (figurative) nudge when necessary. I have experience working with all kinds of problems & diagnoses, both inpatient and outpatient, as well as individual and group settings. The majority of my experience lies in dual diagnosis treatment, working with clients with co-occurring mental health and substance use diagnoses.

I believe we all carry a wealth of past experiences, and that this often involves old or unhealed wounds. Sometimes this presents as feelings of disconnection, depression, racing thoughts or anxiety, sometimes as substance use, self-harming behavior, or relationship problems. Wherever you are at, I will work to build a relationship together which we can use to explore your life and where you are now with the goal of moving forward and growing in whatever ways you want. The therapist-client relationship is something I value deeply.

My clinical training and background in the field of adolescent addiction includes working with families to restore the ruptured relationships that typically accompany addiction and to promote the healthy connections that support recovery.
In my work with adolescents, young adults and their parents, I am committed to providing individuals with the tools to realize their potential and separate themselves from the substances, behaviors and attitudes hindering their development and well-being. I provide a collaborative, respectful and empathic therapeutic context for addressing the personal issues and challenges that interfere with healthy functioning and a sense of personal competence. Using a strength-based approach, I specialize in helping young people develop the self-awareness and coping tools necessary for navigating a confusing and complicated time in their lives.

Educated and trained at the University of Pennsylvania, I specialized in treating substance abuse issues using a variety of evidence based therapeutic approaches (CBT for substance abuse, motivational interviewing, etc).
I look forward to exploring your concerns, fears and needs in a supportive therapeutic environment. I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families addressing substance abuse, relationship, mood issues ( depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc). I often work with family members who have trouble motivating a loved one to consider treatment, or who want to learn about their loved one's condition and how to best support them. I value maintaining relationships with other providers, including psychiatrists, other therapists such as group therapists, couple therapists, inpatient treatment facilities, etc. as part of maintaining good coordination of your care as necessary.

I have worked with many different populations from community mental health, child residential programs, and individual clients struggling with addiction and cooccurring disorders.
The goal of therapy is to develop a connected relationship with an empathic professional that helps alleviate any issues that the client wants to work on. A client should expect a respectful and creative environment in which they can safely explore their needs and wants. Some people believe that they are not worthy of help or are ashamed of what seeking help means about themselves. Therapy is there for anyone who wants to use it, from people who just need a boost through a troubled time to people seeking long term work examining patterns and habits that interfere with their hope and happiness.

I practice Gestalt Therapy and EMDR to help individuals learn about and work through any past traumatic experiences, as well difficulties with substance use.
Can you image a life where you are able to treat yourself with kindness and compassion? Whether you are new to therapy and curious about how therapy can benefit you, or are returning to healing, I am here to help. All that is needed to start this process is a willingness to be curious about your life, which is the first step to initiating the changes you would like to make.

I specialize in working with clients who have experienced childhood trauma, domestic/intimate partner violence or relationship challenges, chronic pain/illness, and substance use issues. I also appreciate the beautiful tangents, metaphors, and insights from my work with neurodiverse clients. Much of my work focused on helping clients examine how trauma has shaped their lives, decisions, & current circumstances and find ways to heal. Finding meaning and insight from the connections and patterns we can see in the past and present is key to informing the work we can do together to pursue a more intentional and satisfying future.

I’ve specialized in addiction, OCD, trauma therapy, family and couples counseling and various other topics in the world of mental health.
Hello! My name is Max Croteau and I have had the pleasure of being a licensed professional counselor for almost 10 years now. In this time, I have been able to mold my style of understanding, accepting while also challenging and motivational into a successful model of growth and change for those who choose to work with me. I truly am a believer that therapy can sometimes be a side-by-side process, or it can be a process where one guides and the other follows, but ultimately the choice is up to you. I don’t want you to live a life that I tell you to live.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
