The hard work of learning how to identify and communicate my needs, set boundaries, and let go of parts of my past have led me to a life I love as a therapist, mother, and wife in an open marriage.
If you’re stuck in self-destructive conflicts with family, unable to move on from difficult experiences in your past, or paralyzed by anxiety, I can help. Whether you’re looking to work through trauma, set boundaries with your relatives, change dynamics with a romantic partner, or reconnect with what gives you pleasure, I can guide you in taking that first step. As a teen coping with my parents’ messy divorce, I turned to self-harm while also journeying through my own sexual self-discovery. Therapy and safe relationships helped me feel better by speaking about my pain rather than keeping it inside or taking it out on myself.

I serve cis, transgender, gender-expansive, queer, and straight clients in polyamorous and monogamous relationships on issues including communication, grief, marriage, sex, intimacy, and infidelity.
When our relationships feel disconnected, our conversations are critical to the way we go on. Each interaction has the possibility to bring us closer together or to push us further apart. As we feel more understood, respected, and capable, we can turn towards one another with more compassion and room for connection. I offer a curious and non-pathologizing approach to creating our conversations. Together, we can put language to your experiences and make new meaning of pain, trauma, and grief. Tangible transformations in our lives and relationships are possible when we feel most connected to ourselves and to others.

As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with almost 20 years of experience, I specialize in working with anxiety, eating disorders, men's issues, and high functioning multiracial couples and families.
Despite your best intentions and efforts, do you feel stuck in your personal life, intimate relationships, family relationships or workplace? You may be faced with challenges that are deeply rooted in your early life experiences, your primary attachments, in how you view the world, or due to misunderstanding between you and significant others. Challenges can arise during stressful life transitions, such as divorce or death of loved ones. But they can also arise from positive life experiences, such as marriage or the birth of a child. Left untreated, these challenges can grow into chronic problems that can corrode your sense of self and your relationships.

Together, we'll work on dealing with the things that are bothering you in your everyday life, be it challenges with relationships, work, or family. Whether our work is one-on-one, with you two as a couple, my clients gain valuable insights and practical tools to get unstuck and move forward. Imagine leaving each session feeling understood, empowered, and equipped to navigate life with confidence.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
