While I work with many types of problems and specific individual needs, I specialize in the treatment of trauma (which includes PTSD from single traumatic experiences, as well as complex trauma from childhood experiences), sleep/ insomnia difficulties, the various forms of anxiety, grief, hopelessness, suicide, and chronic pain/illness.
Finding a caring, dedicated therapist to help you with your psychological or physical difficulties is important. Sessions are 1 to 2 hours, as determined by what you want and need. Some specialized sessions, e.g. EMDR, are 1 1/2 hours. Your time and energy are valuable, and while there are times when talking is helpful, I am always results-focused using effective collaborative actions and solutions that will help you resolve your problem(s). Please consult my website at KevinDrab.com to learn more about myself and my philosophy and therapeutic approaches. I do not take insurance, but provide receipts for insurance reimbursement.

I am here to help you become the best version of yourself. I have always been attracted to a holistic approach to counseling that includes brain health, nutrition, exercise, sleep hygiene, and overall wellness. Along with talk therapy, I also utilize Neurofeedback training to help stabilize brainwaves. Neurofeedback Therapy is a non-invasive/non-drug based form of treatment that facilitates desired functions and mental states. Self-regulation is key in improving daily stressors, quality of life, and a positive well being. I am rewarded by seeing my clients' efforts to grow and achieve their goals.

I believe that the foundation of change in therapy starts with feeling a genuine connection with your counselor. I strive to create a comfortable therapeutic environment that allows my clients to feel safe in sharing with me their thoughts, feelings, and experiences so that healing can begin. I take a holistic approach to counseling. It is important to get to know you as a whole, including emotional, spiritual, social, and physical health, while exploring past and present experiences with conflicts. I then explore with you what aspects could be contributing to current struggles and how to begin to make healthy changes.

Taking the first step to talk to a therapist can be overwhelming and frightening. It takes strength and courage, but it can be life changing. My goal is to create a safe, caring and nonjudgemental space for clients to be heard and understood. It is my privilege to work with individuals and couples to instill hope, empowerment, and support personal growth. Communicating feelings in a safe environment promotes healing through expression, which often leads to insight into self and more meaningful connections with others. Taking the first step is the most difficult step.

I am PA/NJ licensed clinical social worker with over 20 yrs experience. I received my BA in Psychology in 1994 and my MSW in 1997. Since then, I have worked in various settings including the Behavioral Health System of Philadelphia, numerous behavioral health facilities which include psychiatric units, detox and rehabs, college counseling settings and in assisted living/nursing facilities with older adults. In 2013, I started an in person private practice and then made the jump to telehealth during the pandemic. I find that telehealth is much more accessible and convenient for clients as we are still able to do amazing work!

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
