I am a licensed psychologist who enjoys working with all different kinds of people. I like to work on what gets in the way of optimum mental health. Much of my practice in the past almost thirty years has focused on relationships of all kinds, depression, self-esteem, conflict resolution, better communication, adult children of alcoholics, parenting, anxiety, chronic illness, addictions, and sexual abuse. I believe our work doesn't just happen in our therapy hour, but between sessions as well. I am committed to psychotherapy and helping people to change in a supportive atmosphere.

I want to serve clients who, in particular, have issues adjusting to changes in their physical abilities, whether due to changes in brain functioning or to other other physical illnesses. For many of these clients, these physical issues are accompanied by problems with adjustment, thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. I want to work with clients who seek to improve their lives, despite serious emotional, brain-related, or other serious physical issues. They aspire to having more satisfying relationships, better mood, and a sense of self-determination.

I am a psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of complex trauma and PTSD. I believe in creating a relatable and safe space to work through the toughest parts of our past. While some trauma is overt, such as PTSD, other traumas can be hidden behind depression or anxiety. Emotional traumas can even arise from being raised by parents or guardians with personality disorders. I have over 10 years of experience using EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and somatic interventions to address various forms of trauma.

Welcome to my passion: a safe, collaborative, empowering space where you're supported to be unapologetically yourself. My ideal client longs to become more aware of themselves, curious about what feelings/lack there of experienced, open to working through active/past MH struggles, such as self-confidence, depression, anxiety, relational conflict, trauma, stress, and more. My passion and hope for all my clients are captured well in this quote: "Whenever you find yourself doubting how far you can go, just remember how far you have come...everything you have faced, all the battles you have won, and all the fears you've overcome..."

As a licensed psychologist, my goal is to help empower you to transform your life in the ways you desire. Therapy works by helping you develop new understandings about yourself, and new strategies for handling your emotions, thoughts, and behavior. The fact that you are considering therapy means that you have already taken the first, and perhaps most important step. Ultimately, therapy can enhance your self esteem, connectedness to others, effectiveness in your life, and happiness.

I approach treatment as a collaboration between two partners, working together to deepen our understanding of your concerns, and construct alternative ways of thinking, being, relating and feeling. As a relational psychodynamic therapist, I consider our relationship an essential mechanism of change.

Mental health, addiction, and chronic illness all have something in common. They can be debilitating and create cyclical habits that are difficult to break. I work with motivated individuals who are willing to make a change in their lives for the better, examine their past and present experiences and feelings, and work to find healthier ways to cope.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
