I have been in practice for 30 years seeing men, women and adolescents. For the most part my clients (I have no patients) suffer with symptoms that would be characterized as depression or anxiety but whatever their issues I see them as particular to my client, not a diagnosis. Often their difficulties are related to their current circumstances or past events. Sometimes having a trusted person to tell their story to can be all the help they need.

I’ve worked with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, anger issues, grief and loss, divorce, and relationship struggles.
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker I am trained to take a holistic approach to healing. That’s really just a fancy way to say that I help you look at and focus on everything that makes you, you. And you are not just your diagnosis or symptoms. Healing is hard. Change is hard. But they are within reach. That’s why I am driven to do what I do. I work with individuals to make that easier by creating a safe place to explore strengths, family history, support systems, community, and barriers. Together we walk the journey to healing and change, whatever that may look like.

Navigating significant life transitions can be both challenging and overwhelming. Whether you’re a young adult establishing yourself as you transition into adulthood or a woman seeking balance and resilience through different life stages, these changes can bring about anxiety and depression. You might face uncertainty, stress, or isolation as you take on new responsibilities while striving for stability, confidence, and well-being.

Do you feel overwhelmed both mentally and physically? Are you not sure what the feelings that you're having are, why you are having them, or don't know how to cope with them? I currently help adolescents, and young adults learn about anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and trauma. I would love to also branch out and work with adults as well as the current population I work with, but just haven't got the chance yet! I also help clients identify where these uncomfortable feelings could be coming from and ways that they can manage those feelings to be able to increase their quality of life.

We’ll look deeper into areas that range from: relationships, anxiety, and depression.
Hi, I’m Kendal McDowell and I have years of experience working with teens and older, with a primary focus on working with college students and college athletes. Having been a college athlete myself, I'm familiar with the joys and stressors of collegiate life. College can be an exciting and eye opening experience, but sometimes it can also open our eyes to some things within ourselves or those around us we may not have noticed before.

Sometimes you can walk away from therapy still wondering "what do I do next?"; this is where I can be of assistance! I help those struggling with anxiety, depression, communication, realtionship issues & overall emotion regulation challenges. Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
