When anxiety becomes too much it starts affecting the quality of your life. You may find you have difficulty with the day-to-day: looking after yourself, holding down a job, trying new things or simply enjoying your leisure time. Social situations can be a source of stress in which your body might tighten up for a fight response. You feel overwhelmed; thinking no way I am capable of interacting. Your body can develop symptoms from anxiety. Physical symptoms from anxiety feel like they are filling up your body: pain, fatigue, stomach upset, headaches, backache, dizziness, etc. Somatic Anxiety is the physical presentation of anxiety.

Has there been a time in your life when you felt overwhelmed, confused, conflicted, frightened, or burdened? A time when life's journey presented multiple paths and you turned down one more difficult than expected, and you got scratched and bruised by the bushes overgrown thorns? If you've answered yes, then counseling can be a vehicle supporting you through life's challenges to achieve emotional health and well-being. Caring, collaborative, and compassionate counseling can help you heal your emotoinal wounds, fears diminished, and the perceived darkness can be replaced by a new vision for yourself and new possibilities.

Every day gives you choices, sometimes too many choices. Yet, it is “your” choice to make today or tomorrow. Through practicing as a psychotherapist for the past ten years, being a parent, professor, and an athlete I have experienced many people having difficulties making choices. So many of us get stuck with feelings of depression, fear and anxiety that making even one choice becomes too difficult. It helps to have someone assist by listening, guiding and being a support. This role is a role that I feel comfortable with as a therapist. My therapeutic style is best described as engaged & supportive

Does your child often have meltdowns or emotional explosions? Are you constantly fighting and feel like your home is a battlefield? Is it hard to connect with your child and understand why they’re behaving the way that they are? My family-oriented and collaborative approach to therapy may be a fit. I want to help you and your child decrease the amount of fighting that occurs and uncover why your child behaves the way they do. I believe that if families are more connected, our society becomes more connected, which means a more positive future. And a positive future is what you want for your child.

Family of origin patterns often interfere with successful relationships; using Imago therapy we can uncover and heal emotional patterns that prevent marriages from thriving. The stresses of life can be overwhelming especially if one is not in a good relationship with oneself - are you your own best friend? My passion in life is to help others break free from eating disorders and disordered eating so that they can live fuller lives. I am an Art Therapist and Licensed Practicing Counselor with many years in the field. I believe each person's needs are different and unique. Part of recovery is becoming more connected to the self and ultimately more aware of your needs so that symptoms become less desirable. I work with clients with eating disorders as well as family members who may need guidance and direction in how to help their loved ones.

You don't have to be at "rock bottom" to start therapy. I help men and women make space for healing & growth within a busy week. My clients are often looking to find new direction within their career or relationship, heal their inner wounds, make meaning out of a difficult change they’re facing, or trying to uncover what's really going on. You may be feeling “okay,” but imagine the possibility of feeling even more like your true self. Therapy does not require a formal mental health diagnosis or crisis situation. Everyone deserves the opportunity to explore themselves and therapy is a good place to start.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
