Are you struggling in a relationship and finding yourself stuck in a negative cycle with someone you love? Do you find that all your good intentions lead you further from connection? The closest relationship is where the biggest hurts happen because this person means so much to us. Often we are stuck in a cycle where there is no good move. We fight for our connection, and things blow up. We tuck away our pain, and we feel further apart. This feels like so much pressure, and often a hopeless place to be.

I work with a wide range of emotional and behavioral challenges that include anxiety, depression, anger, guilt, shame, embarrassment, procrastination, avoidance, marital/couple/family relations and more. My approach though highly individualized and eclectic is primarily a cognitive behavioral one in which we delve into the emotional, behavioral and cognitive roots in order to identify, challenge and ultimately replace those unhelpful aspects with health promoting aspects. This along with a commitment to hard work on the part of the client often results in improved functioning and an enriched and more satisfying quality of life.

I am particularly focused on stress management and the use of hypnosis and mindfulness to aid individuals in increasing relaxation, reducing pain and anxiety as well as improving satisfaction with themselves and the life choices they are making.
People come to treatment for a variety of reasons.I view each person as unique and strive to assist individuals to overcome challenges and meet the goals that are important in their lives. As we work to let go of behaviors, thoughts and feelings that are not useful in the present, new healthier patterns can emerge and be adopted. Treatment is always focused on achieving a greater sense of comfort and satisfaction, psychologically, emotionally physically and spiritually.

I believe that the key to change in psychotherapy is creating a safe environment in which you can explore the issues that brought you into therapy, and developing new ways of coping with them. This is facilitated by my focus on building a strong and mutually trusting therapeutic relationship. I utilize an insight-oriented approach when underlying factors are contributing to emotional pain, but I also use cognitive behavioral strategies, mindfulness/relaxation, and problem solving to help people find the right solutions for them.

With 50 years of experience, Therapy Center of Philadelphia offers a healing space that is accessible, deep, and lasting. We do this by meeting you fully in your experience and identity. All of our therapists strive to be trans-affirming and we offer support around medical transition. Serving adult women and trans communities, our therapy services are offered on a sliding fee scale and without treatment limits.

My clients are dreaming of a better world but feel stuck in a world that is causing them great pain. They are passionate about change, both for themself and for the world around them, but might not know where or how to start. If this sounds like you, I want to offer you support in figuring out what change can even look like and how to reach towards it. I can't offer you "the answers" but I can offer you my belief in your ability to change yourself and your world, if you choose it. I view this change process as starting with self, connecting with community, and finally engaging in systems change.

I have worked with a broad range of clients in my career, helping to manage depression, anxiety, chronic illness, reentry after incarceration, healing from partner violence, and much more.
Healing from trauma, setting healthy boundaries, and caring for yourself in an unjust world are transformative, radical journeys, and I'm here to help guide you through them. I specialize in providing care based in a trauma-informed, liberation framework. I strive to create a space for all clients to feel safe, seen, and supported. I believe therapy is political and I don’t shy away from the impact that our government’s history, policies, and practices have on our mental health. Together we'll explore the intersections of your experiences and identities as we work to reach your goals.

I work primarily with queer and trans people, people who have experienced trauma, people living with illness and disability, and people in caregiving roles (personally or professionally).
We've all found ways of surviving in an often chaotic and overwhelming world, but many of those survival strategies can lead us to feel out of control, disconnected or helpless. I am a somatic and trauma-trained therapist. I take a harm reduction approach. I aim to help you understand the ways your brain and body have learned to adapt and to illuminate new paths toward connection, self worth, agency and meaning. I believe that through nonjudgmental awareness, exploration and acceptance, our moment-to-moment experience shows us how to heal if we can learn to listen.

If you find yourself repeating old patterns in relationships, suffering from past trauma, or navigating the world as a queer, trans, or otherwise marginalized person, the right trauma and sex therapist could be the missing member of your support team. I specialize in working with clients who are processing trauma, exploring gender and sexuality, living with chronic pain and chronic illness, and more. As a queer and nonbinary person, I understand the importance of shared identity with a therapist, and work to foster a safe space for LGBTQIA+, kinky, and non-monogamous folks to bring their full selves into the therapy room.

According to the great poet Rainer Maria Rilke, "The only journey is the journey within." We all need help sometimes and we all have room to grow. I believe that everyone can benefit from therapy, whether it is to address a severe mental illness, to receive support through a rough season of life, or to gain greater self-knowledge and unleash your full potential. My professional interests include psychoses, dissociative disorders, depression, anxiety, trauma, narcissistic abuse, and obesity.

I have additional expertise in ADHD, attachment, and chronic pain.
I think we can all agree, life is hard! The most honest and challenging thing we can do when the demands of life outweigh our capacity to cope is to reach out for support. Kudos to you for embarking on this brave (and potentially daunting) journey! Needing support does not mean you are weak or broken; it simply shows you're human. As your therapist, my aim is to create a secure and comforting environment where you can be your authentic self. I deeply value the therapeutic benefits of laughter, which I use in sessions to alleviate fears and foster a sense of safety and trust.

I believe that personal growth and change come from understanding. There is no shortage of therapeutic approaches to building understanding, and the "right one" just depends on what works best for you. My style of therapy focuses on the person in context - you're an individual, so therapy should match your individual needs. I pull from different evidence-based modalities like CBT, DBT, ACT, psychodynamic theory, and mindfulness, to help you get where you want to go. By exploring your past and present, I hope we can work together to shape the future you want.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
