I believe in the Talking Cure. Life can be fraught with disappointments, losses, stressors and challenges that feel overwhelming and discouraging. Finding words to describe thoughts, feelings, past and present experiences, in presence of a compassionate and non-judgmental other, affords profound and lasting relief from the emotional discomfort that interferes with the ability to live the life one desires. Undigested emotional pain from the past can interfere with ones ability to live a full and satisfying life in the present. Identifying those emotions whose roots are in the past, frees us to live more fully in the here and now.

Mental health, addiction, and chronic illness all have something in common. They can be debilitating and create cyclical habits that are difficult to break. I work with motivated individuals who are willing to make a change in their lives for the better, examine their past and present experiences and feelings, and work to find healthier ways to cope.

I enjoy working with artists, activists, writers, teachers, spiritual seekers, fellow social workers and therapists, queer and trans people, people in non-monogamous relationship styles, neurodivergent people, people with chronic illness, teens and/or their parents, and anyone interested in exploring the experience of being alive on this earth.
Do you feel stuck in patterns that lead to disappointment and hurt? Have you tried to makes changes, but they don't last? Many of us were conditioned into survival strategies that separate us from ourselves. This separation can create the belief that there is something wrong with us, as though we are unworthy or unlovable, leading to cycles of shame, numbing, anger, fear, and grief. I use internal family systems therapy to create a space for compassion and curiosity that allows these feelings to be explored and held. This process can help you to move beyond stagnant patterns of hurt that limit your growth, potential, and love.

Everything we experience in this universe is a relationship. We can move through so much of our life out of alignment with our highest and truest self. This can lead to experiencing confusion, frustrated emotions, a dysregulated nervous system, and all kinds of mental health symptoms. The work we do together is to shine light and awareness on how you are experiencing life and your relationship to yourself, those around you, and everything in between. Cultivating awareness allows us to see where our past and present beliefs or traumas are limiting us from experiencing a full life of more harmony and ease.

We've all found ways of surviving in an often chaotic and overwhelming world, but many of those survival strategies can lead us to feel out of control, disconnected or helpless. I am a somatic and trauma-trained therapist. I take a harm reduction approach. I aim to help you understand the ways your brain and body have learned to adapt and to illuminate new paths toward connection, self worth, agency and meaning. I believe that through nonjudgmental awareness, exploration and acceptance, our moment-to-moment experience shows us how to heal if we can learn to listen.

Availability THIS week! I think we can all agree, life is hard! The most honest thing we can do when the demands of life outweigh our capacity to cope is to reach out for support. Kudos to you for embarking on this brave (and potentially daunting) journey! Needing support does not mean you are weak or broken; it simply shows you're human. My aim is to create a secure and comforting environment where you can be your authentic self. I highly value authenticity, which informs my style as a therapist. I also embrace the therapeutic benefits of laughter, which I use in sessions to alleviate fears and foster a sense of safety and trust.

My ideal client often begins therapy knowing something is off, uncomfortable, or painful but unsure where to go next. Sometimes, they aren't sure what is causing their distress and are looking for help to understand what happened that led them here. Other times, they are aware of what's causing their pain but are looking for an additional perspective as they begin to make changes. Their goals, on some level, are to find relief, understanding, or peace.

Whether you are coming to therapy for anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, a life change, or just a general sense of unease, facing these issues can be scary. Healing isn’t easy because it involves confronting our pain and hurts. Healing can also be full of joy, hope, connection, and freedom as we experience new possibilities of being and relating. My approach is warm, relational, and integrative. I strive to offer a space where you can feel safe enough to look inward – to gently and compassionately welcome all parts of yourself with less judgment and shame.

When it comes to working with clients, I like to meet them where they are at. My goal is to enter into a therapeutic alliance with my client and have the opportunity to explore their presenting concerns and together explore solutions or a different way of looking at the presenting issue. At times, clients come to into therapy for a resolution, support, compassion, a different perspective, and most importantly validation. I am here to support a client through this process.

Life's ups and downs are sometimes overwhelming and can impact one's mental and physical state. In a safe space, I gently challenge clients to work on becoming more self-aware, so they can break unhealthy patterns which affect how we see ourselves and others.

I utilize an eclectic, psychoanalytic, and relational approach while employing a strong racial justice, feminist, and queer theory lens. I practice from a fat-lib, sex-positive, and intersectional feminist perspective. I believe that one's past informs how they interact with and experience the world. Healing takes place as one fosters empathy and consideration for their past and present selves. The therapeutic relationship allows for gaining deeper perspective and understanding of oneself. I strive to build genuine and earnest rapport with my clients by being deeply nonjudgmental and always practicing with respect.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
