Are you concerned about how sad or anxious your child is? Are you getting frequent calls from school regarding your child's behavior? Are you having issues communicating with your teenager? As a parent, it is difficult to see your child hurting. You child may be acting out at home and at school. Your teenager may lash out at you, leaving you wondering what happened. Or it may be more serious concerns regarding your child's unhealthy eating patterns, hurting themselves, or even considering suicide. Complex trauma can be a stubborn life companion. Living through repeated exposure to traumatic experiences can leave you feeling unable to trust yourself or others, feeling chronically unsafe, and seeing yourself differently. Alongside those wounds, complicated grief can also be woven into the mix of post-traumatic pain. Complicated grief is so much more than “just” a loss - it’s sadness, anger, and guilt that cannot always be easily defined. As a licensed professional counselor with a special interest in trauma treatment, I understand the profound impact these experiences can have on an individual's emotional well being.

What sets me apart is that I will call you within 24 hours of getting a call from you.I suppose my ideal client would be the one that would feel the best fit with me. After the research that has been done, what matters most is the relationship (the fit) you have with your therapist, not their level of expertise, sense of humor, great coping skills, etc. However, I do best with individuals who are highly motivated to change. That does not mean that there will not be setbacks. However, it's how we view those setbacks. Are they failures or learning experiences? I prefer learning experiences. My goal is to get you to be your ideal self.

As an individual and couples therapist and a parenting coach for over 25 years, I am very experienced at working with clients in crisis. Often a marriage is in trouble or just not enough. Parents are trying hard to be the best parents they can be, but not succeeding. Individuals can be stuck, overwhelmed, confused or feel hopeless. The habituated way we cope often causes us great suffering and prevents us from enjoying our lives.

Whether you are struggling with feeling good about yourself, overwhelm, grief, finding life meaning, unhelpful relationship patterns, or anything else weighing on your mind and heart, I would be honored to navigate your journey with you. No concerns are too big or too small-if it matters to you, it matters to me. I believe therapeutic success involves not getting rid of parts of you that struggle but uncovering your inner strengths to cope and reduce symptoms in healthy ways, in addition to acknowledging accomplishments big or small, and trusting the process, as change may take longer or look different than you may expect.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
