Therapy can be such an overwhelming process to get started with, especially when you may also be struggling with ADHD, trauma symptoms, or anxiety that make everyday tasks feel monumental. For marginalized people in particular, feeling safe and truly seen by their therapist may be particularly challenging. As a Black, queer, neurodivergent therapist with 10 years experience, my approach is relational, strengths-based, person-centered, affirming, and anti-oppressive. Together we'll implement accessible, functional strategies to help you close the gap between the life you're living and the life you envision for yourself.

My work focuses on making sense of what feels complex, placing it into words, and meaningful action. This can include struggling to balance personal wants and expectations of others, conflict due to living in dual cultures, trauma from substance abuse, racism, or worry and sadness. I provide therapy that is conversational with feedback, humor, curiosity, and partnership. The work we do together will consider all sociopolitical factors, community, beliefs, abilities, and all that is inherently important and has impacted you because who you are and what you need, reaches beyond your emotions.

Life is stressful enough and that can be made worse when you don't have the right person to talk with. It is often hard to gain clarity and find the right direction for yourself when stress, anxiety, depression, hurtful life factors and indecisiveness cloud your view. The good news is that I get that! I have a strong empathetic therapeutic style and I strive to create a warm, relaxing environment that is still conducive to the urgency you may need. I am highly trained in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Family Systems, Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), and Positive Psychology.

Many of my clients are men or women who are going through some type of life challenge. Many of these individuals are looking to talk to someone about their relationship, their marriage, their divorce...many are fathers or mothers looking for advice. I have noticed more and more men have tried therapy in the last few years, Many people are at a breaking point, and need help. Sometimes it just takes one person who hears you, understands you and is there to help guide you. The next step is to reach out.

I always wanted to be a therapist and knew I was on the path I had envisioned. I attended Old Dominion University in Virginia and played on an NCAA Division One field hockey team. Along the way, I had to balance many new areas: being a full-time therapist, mother of two, mother to dog children, and financial manager. I used various skills I teach in my own life. I would never ask someone to do something I couldn’t see myself doing.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
