I view persons as made up of emotions, thoughts, relationships, biology, and our spiritual selves. Consequently, I first help you stabilize by making necessary changes in behavior. Medical or neurological contributions and possible nutritional deficiencies are examined. I address any distorted thinking that is contributing to your emotional pain. If systems in your life (family, work, school) are a factor, they are also addressed. Finally, we work with the larger questions of existence (spiritual issues, issues of purpose/ meaning), which are all vital to mental health. All areas are dealt with from a solid grounding in scientific literature and research.

People need different things in their lives and when they come to therapy they can expect a calm, quiet atmosphere and a place where they can express themselves in ways that they may have never felt safe enough to do so. There are so many challenges in life and individuals should take pride in recognizing that it takes strength to reach out for guidance.

My ideal client would be a woman in her 30s or 40s with young children. She has anxiety about parenting and uncertainty about her abilities as a parent. Her goal is to work on her anxiety and confidence in parenting and to have a place to talk about the everyday struggles of being a parent.

I always incorporate family into my work with children but also see parents individually to improve their parenting skills and explore their own needs.
I enjoy working with children with anxiety, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders. My goal is always to create a warm, fun environment that children enjoy and to model skills that are practical to take out of the office and use at home. I use a combination of ABA and CBT techniques based on the needs of the child and family. I'm also skilled in working with young adults on the autism spectrum on social/self-management skills and women in the pregnancy and postpartum stages of their lives. As a mother and parent myself, I am particularly honored to hold space for women navigating the challenges of pregnancy and new parenthood.

Having an eating disorder can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to control your life. I help you or your teenager understand the function their eating disorder has played in their life, and how to create a healthier way to move forward, free of the eating disorder’s rules and fears. When working with teens, I also help parents better understand their child’s experience and how best to support them. While I specialize in eating disorders, I also support clients through parenting, divorce, career transitions, and managing the stressors of everyday life, including break-ups and the often-tricky transition into adulthood.

You're not a bad parent; you're simply navigating the challenges of parenthood with the tools you have.
Transitioning into motherhood can be overwhelming. You once managed everything effortlessly, but now, with the added responsibilities, it feels like you're constantly falling short. The pressure to excel in every aspect of life—parenting, career, relationships—leaves you feeling inadequate and burdened by guilt and shame.

I feel that early treatment and support can not only help individuals in their new role as a parent, but change the way they approach their future stressors.
Was your journey towards parenthood one that brought overwhelming feelings of sadness, grief, and anxiety? Has your relationship with your partner changed drastically since having your child? Is being a parent much more difficult than you expected it would be? If you’ve experienced anxiety, depression or trauma in the perinatal period, you’re not alone. The pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period can be one of the most consuming & loneliest times in a new parent's life. No one deserves for this time in their lives to be filled with distressing thoughts, dread, or fear.

Whether you are a young adult starting looking to start your life in the 'real world' and looking for support or a parent struggling to best advocate for your child's needs at school, I can help! I look forward to connecting with you.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), certified school counselor, and former special education teacher. I earned my PhD from the University of Georgia in the field of Counseling and Student Personnel Services. I believe that every person has unique gifts and amazing potential. I also believe that we all have the ability to grow into our best selves - even though that process can be really challenging sometimes. I enjoy using creative and self-expressive tools to help my clients (mostly older children, adolescents, and young adults) live more joyfully and authentically.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
