I have psychoanalytic training at the Pittsburgh Psychoanalytic Center requiring supervised case work, classwork and my own personal analysis.
At the core of my work as a licensed clinical social worker psychotherapist is awareness of human suffering in ourselves and in the world and dignity and respect of each individual. I understand that personal growth and individuation are continuous throughout life regardless of past circumstances, current struggles or future aspirations. Some problems are readily resolved by meeting once a week. When comprehensive change is desired I use an analytic method (free association, dream work, relational analysis) meeting 2 or more times a week which can free up energy, bring new perspectives, and change unproductive personality patterns.

It is possible to overcome seemingly insurmountable life challenges and find stability. Psychotherapy can light the way from chaos and hopelessness towards self-acceptance, meaning, and control. Focused on your individual needs, I strive to create a time and space which is entirely yours. A safe, private, well-bounded space where honest and intimate discussions can take place. For the past 12 years, I have been working with a diverse mixture of individuals and couples using primarily psychoanalytic techniques. My aim is not simply to facilitate symptom relief, but to midwife meaningful and positive changes in your life.

You do not need a diagnosis of ADHD, anxiety or depression to benefit from therapy. Life can be hard enough without barriers at every turn. Constant challenges within a child’s education system, adolescents unhealthy social media habits, difficult relationships, and even from time to time conflict within the family can cause stress. Stress can explode in detrimental ways and times when not fully treated. Together, we can help break down life’s barriers so you and your child can achieve their full potential.

Psychotherapy can help you to better approach problems with depression, loss, anxiety, trauma, relationships and self-esteem issues with greater understanding and possibility for transformation. I practice in the psychodynamic model of Object Relations that emphasizes the development of empathy, a process of "knowing with" between client and therapist, to discover previously unknown or inaccessible sources of frustration and distress leading to greater self-capacity.

The type of therapy I practice is psychoanalytic, which means I embrace complexity and work with what lies beneath the surface, the unconscious wishes and desires that lie outside of everyday awareness.
You may be suffering from anxiety, depression, or compulsive behavior, having trouble making a relationship work, or perhaps had therapy or medication that has not helped enough. I listen with empathy and compassion and bring to bear my clinical training and experience so that you heal and grow in ways that are transformative and lasting. For religious people I am comfortable integrating your spiritual beliefs into our work.

Psychoanalytic practice traverses what afflicts you, gradually opening its interior dimensions by passing it thru the encounter of each session.
In my practice I offer a space for you to say what cannot be said anywhere else. It is an unconditional welcome to speak what is most real for you; and to speak freely, fully, and without censorship. Dreams, fantasies, memories. Ruptures and traumas. Experiences of love and sexuality as lived in your body and relational bonds. Crises, complaints, and all of the repetitions that happen again and again. These formations (and more) we raise to the dignity of what is most unknown and alive within you. Read deeply into yourself and articulate the 'other scenes' between the lines of lived experience.

As a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, I am uniquely suited to provide holistic care. A psychoanalytic therapy approach offers a highly effective form of treatment through a comprehensive and nuanced framework for working with and addressing trauma, anxiety, depression, identity struggles, low self-esteem, a lostness around a sense of self, struggles in your connections to other people, and feelings of meaninglessness. If advisable, I can also provide careful expert medication management. Together, we will embark on a collaborative exploration, delving into your unique background and personal influences as we work towards healing.

I currently offer weekly individual psychoanalytic therapy at my Squirrel Hill office between the hours of 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Tuesday through Friday.
Human beings are deeply wired for connection and thrive in relationships that provide safety, love, and acceptance. When we find ourselves alone, isolated, and disconnected, especially when our relationships are suffering, we struggle with self-doubt, shame, and beliefs that we are undeserving and unloveable. It doesn't have to be this way. My goal is to create a space for you to explore your story and deepen your self understanding, putting you on a path to aliveness and connection.

My treatment approaches include motivational interviewing and behavioral activation initially while working from an embodied trauma-informed psychoanalytic perspective, which fosters deep and lasting change.
As a Psychotherapist and Physician Assistant with nearly a decade of mental health experience in inpatient, outpatient, and addiction treatment settings, I’m particularly grounded in the diversity of people’s suffering and what helps provide relief. Whether you struggle with the effects of trauma, anxiety, depression, intense inner criticism, or ongoing shame, my first priority is always to create a space where meaningful therapeutic work can take hold. Holding space for caring, honest self-examination while I remain actively and supportively involved are essential ingredients for personal growth and progress.

On our journey it can be helpful to have someone to help us read the narratives which often define our lives. Some of those narratives keep us from experiencing what we want for ourselves now and in the future. Since graduating with a Masters in Counseling Psychology from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology in 2010, I have been working as a therapist with people in various stages of life. A relationship between a therapist and client can provide someone with a deep reflection of how they live and are experienced. I believe therapy can give us the opportunity to rediscover our story in a new way. Real change is possible.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
