I am a trauma therapist with 10 years experience. I can help you learn how to cope with the pain, confusion, anxiety, fear, anger and depression people with trauma often experience. You may not be sure how to resolve trauma and PTSD or where to start. Sometimes when we’ve been through difficult experiences, life becomes so overwhelming that we need help figuring it all out. I can help. I can help through support, education about trauma, and meaningful treatment that helps you feel better.

I do not have a single "specialty" and work with school-age children through seniors.
In my 45 years of post-doctoral experience I've learned to draw from psychodynamic, family systems, and cognitive behavioral approaches so that I can be most effective. My thinking has always been integrative and that has prevented me from taking a "one size fits all" approach to therapy. Over the years it has become clear to me that there are two essential ingredients in helping people change; establishing a strong, real working alliance built on mutual trust, and altering the person's perceptions of themselves and the world around them.

Grief can be related to the death of a loved one; a chronic illness; or as a part of getting older.
Finding a therapist (for the first time ever or just the first time in awhile) can be overwhelming; I can make it easier for you. If you are grieving a loss, managing a chronic illness, or having trouble adjusting to changes in your life, I can help. You are the expert in your own life; I want to empower you to tell your story without fear of judgment. My role in our work together is to listen to your struggles, remind you of your strengths, and find a way to honor your losses.

How does the "talking cure" help? It might have even been called the "listening cure." Having a helpful and supportive ear is something many people find they need at various transition points in their lives. Having a safe place to talk, in a warm and supportive environment, is crucial. The tool of our work is the relationship and, as research has shown, is the most important predictor of success in psychotherapy. I enjoy working with my patients as they seek to find their way to a richer and more fulfilling life.

If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? If not now, when? (Hillel, 2000 years ago). I'm not content with you feeling accepted and supported. I want you to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to live congruently with your personal values and not with fear of judgment or failure. I want you to be able to nurture and comfort yourself, but also to motivate and push yourself to act in your own best interests. l want you to attach yourself to something greater than yourself and to lessen the time you spend worrying about the future or reliving the past.

For over 35 years, I have helped people of all ages to ease their burdens, face doubt and overcome emotional afflictions with warmth, empathy, and safety. I believe compassion is the cornerstone of a trusting relationship. More recently I have been guiding people to happier, more meaningful lives and relationships by focusing on their often unrealized strengths to facilitate change, have them live more consciously, and become who they want to be.

Hi. I'm Allene Lyons. I'm glad you took that difficult first step and reached out for help. I am a licensed clinical social worker with 49 years of experience working with adults. The natural course of life presents many joys and challenges. There are times when we can bounce back from anything and there are times when our resilience falls short. I believe it shouldn't be so hard to live better. It can be very helpful to have another person offer new perspectives or help you find the way out.

Geriatric and Seniors Therapists

Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?

Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, dementia, and physical mobility challenges.

How can geriatric therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?

Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

How is counseling for elderly different from counseling for other age groups?

Many aspects of geriatric counseling are similar to counseling in younger age groups; in general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. However, therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

Can geriatric counseling help people who suffer from dementia?

Counseling can be highly effective for aging adults with dementia. While some therapists specializing in dementia may work with clients solely on topics surrounding memory loss, they can also assist clients with conditions that may co-occur at old age, such as anxiety or depression. Counselors specializing in working with older adults can also offer an objective assessment of a client’s functioning or disease progression to caregivers, and they may be particularly knowledgeable about community resources that may benefit dementia clients and their families. Therapists specializing in dementia may also be trained in specialized forms of therapy for memory-loss|memory loss, such as Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST)—which can help mentally stimulate dementia clients to preserve cognitive functioning.
