I often provide gender-affirming care to transgender or questioning youth.
Hi there, I'm Bec, and I look forward to meeting with you! I work extensively with trauma, teens, and LGBTQ+ folks. Many of my clients have felt discriminated against and judged in the past, because they don't meet the status quo of what society thinks they "should" be. I help people develop their self-confidence and explore their trauma so that they can live life freely, reduce anxiety and depression symptoms, and make long-lasting meaningful connections with others.

I am a therapist who is passionate about working with clients who are often seen outside the “typical,” including transgender, gender expansive, LGBTQIA+, and neurodivergent individuals. I provide counseling for adolescents, adults, and families in the greater Philadelphia area. I am a queer, trans non-binary therapist and I believe deeply in working toward social justice, so I pay close attention to your intersecting identities and environments to help us both understand your experiences.

We welcome people who are transgender or gender non-conforming regardless, as well as people of color.
With 50 years of experience, Therapy Center of Philadelphia offers a healing space that is accessible, deep, and lasting. We do this by meeting you fully in your experience and identity. We pay attention to the therapy relationship and de-emphasize diagnosing people. We consider systemic oppression (racism, misogyny, anti-queerness, cissexism) as a form of trauma and explore this as part of the healing work. All of our therapists strive to be trans-affirming and we offer support around medical transition. Serving adult women and trans communities, our therapy services are offered on a sliding fee scale and without treatment limits.

Starting therapy means entering a unique relationship that is centered on your care, and which offers profound growth. I see it as a source of understanding and empowerment - it allows us to better know ourselves and also to be ourselves in the world more fully and freely. I work with a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety, existential concerns, complex trauma, negative body image, low self-esteem, life transitions, and challenges that arise in academia. Many of my clients are queer and transgender and I am proud to hold those identities, as well.

I have considerable experience working with people who identify as transgender, non-binary, gender nonconforming, LGBQ, asexual, etc.
I view psychotherapy as a collaborative experience between therapist and patient. I see my role as that of a space holder and guide. I will shed light on and explore what may be causing difficulty in your life, provide affirmation, and offer tools that will help sustain your therapeutic goals. I believe that transformation and change can evolve through collaboration and the development of a renewed narrative that is validating and hopeful.

I have taught workshops on transgender issues at universities, high schools and conferences.
I have a soft spot for people who are quirky and unconventional, as I am. I welcome free spirits and those who yearn to express their authentic selves. Life can be more satisfying when one lives for what brings joy, not approval. I love to work with people who already have some insight into their issues and are ready to explore their emotions, thoughts and behaviors in greater depth and try new behaviors - that's why I do so well counseling fellow therapists. I encourage my clients to experience and understand their emotions, rather than regarding feelings as nasty symptoms that they want to get rid of.

I specialize in treating participants suffering from severe trauma, PTSD, depression, grief, IPV, sexual abuse/physical abuse/emotional abuse and transgender/nonbinary and LGBQT communities.
In many communities and cultures therapy is frowned upon, perceived as a weakness labeling the individual as an outcast. This is very much not the case. Many people believe they are alone, and they suffer in silence because of the stigma that comes with therapy. You do not have to suffer any longer. You deserve peace.

I have been working in mental health for over 15 years providing psychotherapy, supportive counseling and grief counseling. I believe in the strength of the human spirit and I view the client as the expert in their journey to wellness. I hold strength in the statement "I can walk with you but I cannot walk for you".

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
