Unable to accept referrals until Fall 2024. My ideal client is someone who may be facing grief and loss, trauma, disability or chronic illness, LGBTQ+ issues, or just have a sense that a big shift is necessary to live the life they desire and deserve. My hope is that you have a curiosity to go below the surface and dig deep, a willingness to be patient, kind and compassionate to yourself, and maybe even be interested in learning more about your brain and body and willing to learn ways to support them. But, if that's not you, that's ok! I love working with all types of people and supporting their growth - wherever that may go.

In my practice, my goal is to create that space for you, to hold that space for you in each session so that you can bring all that has been weighing you down and together we can lift the burden. I believe in our society today we are seeing things rapidly changing, we as individuals are always striving to find the next right thing. One thing that seems to remain the same is helping others and how we feel when we are helping others. We all have a purpose in life we just need to find out what that purpose may be. I strongly believe that we need to meet the client where they are and allowing the client to reach their own goals. I have assisted clients to begin to identify and address the place of being stuck and bringing them to their path of change.

My ideal client is interested in growth and change. I work with individuals who are seeking to better understand themselves, process their experiences, and heal from hurt. Mental health is health. Most of us have not been taught to think critically about our life experiences, emotions, and triggers, we're simply just reacting and not understanding why we're struggling. In my practice, I work with people to make connections, heal from past hurts, and understand their feelings. I specialize in working with women, but provide services to men and folks anywhere across the gender spectrum.

Are you struggling with stress, anxiety, self-image/identity/esteem, relational issues, or just general feelings of sadness? Are you looking for a therapist who has a sense of humor and will still make you feel understood. I'm not that stoic, serious therapist you've traditionally seen portrayed in movies. I smile, I laugh, I frown, I may even gasp (insert gasp!). But I'll do my best to always make you feel safe and supported. I'm just another human who, like you, is looking to learn, connect, and grow. I believe in taking a down-to-earth, relatable approach to therapy, providing a new perspective while collaborating with you.

The voice in the head has a life of its own. Most people are at the mercy of that voice; they are possessed by thought & by the mind. Since the mind is conditioned by the past, you are then forced to reenact the past again and again. This quote by Eckart Tolle is at the core of my belief in what troubles most of us. We live in our minds, incessantly thinking about our fears, failings, troubled relationships, losses, & shortcomings. We spend too much time inside the mind. The trouble is that when we treat our thoughts and feelings as facts, we allow anxiety, doubt, sadness, hopelessness & self-loathing to take hold and thrive.

My name is Vanessa, and I am the owner of Rooted in Care Counseling. I am passionate about supporting people through their unique experiences with mental health, and specialize in working with Black and other People of Color. I have always strived to be aware of how outside systemic issues and factors contribute to disparities in mental health care, particularly in communities of color. As a Black therapist, I believe that comprehensive mental health treatment acknowledges and accounts for how discrimination and other social barriers can affect one’s ability to process their experiences and safely navigate the world.

I became a therapist to help families stay together even through trauma and hurts, and I continued to do this work because of how it feels to watch someone have that "ah-ha" moment and flourish. I am so passionate about supporting families that I also facilitate webinars and teach courses on how other therapists can support families with a trauma-informed approach. I have enjoyed working with adolescents and their families through 10 years of my clinical experience and currently enjoy supporting adults and couples who suffer from symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma, such as PTSD and grief and loss.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
