Areas of interest & specialty include: Generalized anxiety & depression, spiritual & existential concerns, somatic & body-centered work, women’s issues, couples, creatives, helping professionals, HSPs, life transitions, grief & loss, relationships & sexuality, LGBTQ+ issues.
Three beliefs I hold that influence how I practice are 1) human beings are not problems to be solved 2) therapy is ultimately about relationship 3) the process itself is the solution. We humans are infinitely complex; we're full of opposition and paradox. Our culture pushes quick fixes and immediate answers, but lasting change rarely comes about when we work in this way. I'm interested in helping you come into fuller, richer, more conscious relationship with all of your moving and sometimes disparate parts. Together we will work from the inside out through a deep, relational process.

When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, terrified; or when they are doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity, then understanding is called for. The gentle and sensitive companionship of an empathic stance... provides illumination and healing. In such situations deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another. - Carl Rogers

A Licensed psychologist for over thirty years my style of therapy has transformed to a more experiential approach for my clients. Approaching therapy from a Gestalt perspective focusing on what's showing up in the "Here and Now" while guiding folks to enter an embodied self awareness. More recently I have embarked on a new journey to use horses as part of an Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy modality. Horses like all animals live in the here and now and show up to sessions from a very present focused moment and non judgmental relational curiosity joining folks in their healing process.

Sometimes we are too close to our own lives to see our situation clearly, or we get stuck in repeating patterns and knee-jerk reactions. Sometimes fear and limiting beliefs about ourselves and others get in the way of living the life we want to live. It is a sign of strength to recognize this, and to seek an outside perspective. My approach to counseling is client-centered and intuitive. People know truth when they hear it - it resonates. I have found over the years that finding and following this resonance, works at deeper levels and consistently yields the results my clients are looking for. It is the foundation of my approach.

You probably already know at least some of what you wish were different in your life. Often the things we wish were different we have wanted to change for months, years, or even decades. Counseling often has a balanced focus on helping you learn how to cope with present day symptoms while at times looking back to become free from old patterns of responding. Those old patterns that at one time may have been necessary in order to survive, now may be the very thing limiting your ability to thrive and realize your potential. TESTIMONIAL. Prior to meeting Pamela Goffman I was desperately seeking a psychotherapist who could help me with my deep depression and feelings of emptiness and loneliness. For a period of five years I counseled with four different therapists to seek peace in my life. My life was a mess during my five year search, I had hit rock bottom. It had to be divine intervention that lead me to Pamela Goffman. While the four previous therapists talked me through my immediate issue(s), Pamela quickly identified the core of my pain and we began our journey of healing together.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed and lose one's sense of True North. Issues and experiences from the past may require healing and integration. Current challenges may require more inner wisdom and resourcefulness than we can access on our own. Many people need support to resolve conflicts, deepen connections and expand their lives. Relationships require a solid sense of self, good boundaries, and compassion toward oneself and others, which all can be learned. Even without a religious affiliation, spiritual practices such as gratitude are often enriching. I value new insights, suggest homework and teach practical skills.

Having extensive experience, I use empirically supported therapies, and have treated a wide range of ages as well as the most serious disorders. It is my belief that salient therapy treats a client in 3 different directions: top-down (spiritual dimension), inside out (healing of memories), and outside-in (Cognitive-Behavioral and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy). After a thorough assessment, I would identify with my client, determine problems on which to work, set appropriate goals, and determine the correct therapeutic intervention(s) to be used. Meeting those goals would be a therapeutic benchmark throughout the therapy.

Personal peace starts with a shift in perspective. There is nothing wrong with you. Your life is designed to help you, not block you, in developing confidence, loving boundaries and an open heart. Our work, including elements of forgiveness, grief and personal empowerment, gives you permission to have compassion and support for yourself first, no matter what messages the world and your childhood have trained you to believe. Life happens FOR us, not TO us. I do understand, I have tools to help and I am committed to your peace of mind.

Feeling emotionally overwhelmed at some point is something to which most people can relate. I understand that sometimes life circumstances can leave one feeling conflicted, stressed and even hopeless and helpless. However, there is hope and there is help. As a professional, I have witnessed time and again the power of accurate information, solid resources, and compassionate support to transform even the most dismal circumstances. It is my strong desire to bring this powerful combination to all those with whom I work, as they discover more deeply their own inner resources and strengths.

Existential Therapists
How does existential therapy work?
Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.
Is existential therapy evidence-based?
Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.
How long does existential therapy last?
The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.
Is existential therapy effective?
According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
