Suicidal Ideation Therapists in Conshohocken, PA
In addition to a specialty in the cognitive behavioral treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, I have published treatment protocols and work clinically with perinatal women, suicidal clients, and clients with addictions.
I use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to treat a broad range of mood and anxiety disorders. From 2004 until his death in 2021, I worked with Dr. Aaron T. Beck, who is regarded as the "father" of CBT, to develop and evaluate CBT treatment protocols for many types of clientele and treatment settings. I deliver these evidence-based treatments in my clinical practice. I work well with clients who seek an active, problem-focused, and evidence-based approach to resolve their emotional distress and life problems in a warm, supportive, and compassionate environment that is focused on the cultivation of a strong therapeutic relationship.

My passion for treating teens and adults with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) comes from years of seeing clients genuinely heal from this incredibly effective approach to treatment and go on to live happy and productive lives more fulfilling than they ever thought possible. Difficulty managing strong emotions can negatively influence every aspect of a person's life from intimate relationships, to one's work environment, and family connections. By utilizing a combination of skills training (in an individual or group format) along with individual DBT sessions, my clients complete treatment armed with the skill-set and knowledge to reach their true potential.

How does the "talking cure" help? It might have even been called the "listening cure." Having a helpful and supportive ear is something many people find they need at various transition points in their lives. Having a safe place to talk, in a warm and supportive environment, is crucial. The tool of our work is the relationship and, as research has shown, is the most important predictor of success in psychotherapy. I enjoy working with my patients as they seek to find their way to a richer and more fulfilling life.

We all have parts of ourselves that we wish we could change or simply get rid of. Sometimes, those parts are internal, like our feelings or personality traits (being a "perfectionist" or feeling too "lazy"). Other times, those parts can be external, like our relationships with work, school, and the people around us. Change can be a powerful, and even necessary, experience. But it's not always clear what kind of change we need, or how we can hope to make that change happen.

At nPSYGHT, we emphasize the use of psychotherapy, while supplementing it with medication as needed and at minimum effective doses. We incorporate neuropsychotherapeutic concepts whenever possible, meaning we recognize that advances in our understanding of how the brain works can inform how psychotherapy can be conducted. We stress the importance of general good health habits - diet, exercise, sleep, relaxation methods (meditation, yoga, tai chi) - in promoting mental and behavioral well-being.

Life is complicated and it can get heavy and messy. It feels like things have been turned upside down. Some situations feel like a funhouse mirror and you want out of the funhouse but you don’t know how to find the exit. Life's tasks fall to the side. Your social life feels confusing. Hobbies feel meaningless. Self-care can be difficult. Friends and family offer their support, but their well-intentioned help doesn't always land the way you need it to. No one seems to understand what you’re going through. It's like a two-ton boulder is blocking your path. All you want to do is hide, but you know that's not who you are at your core.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.
Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
