We all want to experience happiness and satisfaction in our lives. I believe that most people have a theory about themselves and their problems, but have struggled to make or sustain progress on their own. That is where having a therapist can be tremendously helpful and where I can provide support and expertise to help you reach your goals. I have been successful in helping people develop healthy coping strategies, and I coach people to try out new behaviors in their daily lives. I have a calm, yet attentive therapeutic style and I strive to empower my clients to experience greater confidence and agency.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, and a Certified Art Therapist I have 28 years of psychotherapy experience.
My focus is helping you to discover your own unique pathway through the hardships and challenges that you are currently facing. This path is almost impossible to find on your own when you feel lost, confused, overwhelmed, and in pain. At such times one naturally feels broken, defective, and defeated by troubles that you have tried your best to understand and overcome. In every struggle however there lies a hidden possibility for growth and development that can lead to a renewed sense of meaning and well being. My work is to listen carefully to you, to come to understand your unique life, and how what you are struggling with actually makes perfect sense. By understanding your life and your struggle we can find what is needed to navigate through to a renewed sense of life and meaning.

When working to engage children and youth, I tend to use art therapy and play therapy techniques.
I am a Clinical Social Worker with a diverse background in treating children, teenagers, young adults and families. I primarily utilize play as a form of therapy and believe that young people learn through the exploration that play offers. I am also a Certified Clincial Trauma Professional (CCTP) and currently I'm training in EMDR training to treat trauma survivors. Trauma is a treatable condition; survivors deserve relief from the impacts of the experiences they have gone through. I feel that EMDR is a very effective way to work through the past and am excited to offer this treatment to people who deal with troubling pasts.

If you find yourself feeling lost, stuck, or overwhelmed, I'm so glad you're here. There are times in all of our lives when we need support, and it's so powerful to seek help for yourself. I specialize in treating anxiety, trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder. My approach to psychotherapy is integrative and includes EMDR therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and self-compassion practice. My training upheld the perspective that many common challenges such as anxiety are symptoms of unprocessed trauma and adverse life experiences; when these root issues are addressed, people often find true relief.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
