Making the first step and initial cont act is one of the hardest things about change.
New for fall 2024...how to help your anxious child parenting group! Accepting new clients with availability between 10am-3pm. Do you feel like anxiety or OCD is holding you and your family hostage from living the life you want to live? Is OCD or anxiety impacting your relationships, school/work, or daily routine? In 2021, I became trained in the SPACE approach helping parents of anxious children. SPACE is particularly helpful if you have an anxious child who refuses to go to therapy or hasn't found therapy to be helpful. I am also trained in Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) to treat OCD/phobias.

Hello! My name is Max Croteau and I have had the pleasure of being a licensed professional counselor for almost 10 years now. In this time, I have been able to mold my style of understanding, accepting while also challenging and motivational into a successful model of growth and change for those who choose to work with me. I truly am a believer that therapy can sometimes be a side-by-side process, or it can be a process where one guides and the other follows, but ultimately the choice is up to you. I don’t want you to live a life that I tell you to live.

My approach is eclectic, drawing from various evidence-based treatment modalities including, Mindfulness- based stress reduction, DBT, ACT, and CBT.
As a Licensed Therapist I believe there is great value in a curious and non-judgmental exploration of our feelings, thoughts, actions, and relational patterns in the presence of another person. I value the collaborative therapeutic relationship, using authenticity and humor within the therapy process. Together we will explore habits, beliefs, physical manifestations, limitations and the underlying issues that keep you stuck in patterns that restrict your capacity to enjoy the quality of life you desire. I welcome all genders, sexual orientations, races, nationalities, and have a strong commitment to trauma-informed care.

I take a humanistic approach to therapy and believe that we make meaning out of the events of our lives; we are capable of engaging our creativity and its healing processes. There are times when we need support to pause, breathe, and listen to our inner wisdom. I will serve as a guide and support, encouraging you to maintain or regain ownership of your own life narrative. My approach is also contemplative, relational, and existential. I often utilize cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy ( ACT) to support you in decreasing struggle and living in alignment with your values.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
