Hello! My name is Sierra Roberts. My approach to therapy is very laid back and conversational, with a touch of mindfulness. I believe therapy should feel comfortable and safe, because things get tough when we start to open up mental wounds. I spent the first half of my career working in community mental health as an Adult Outpatient Therapist where the majority of my clients were working on anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder, among many other concerns. One common thread between all my clients was trauma. As humans, we tend to bury our emotions from those experiences, but eventually, it needs to be dealt with.

Those who have experienced hardships or trauma that has left a lasting impact on them, experienced conflictual or unhealthy relationships in childhood, struggle with maternal / postpartum mental health, and new (or seasoned!) parents trying to decrease reactivity and increase connection are all ideal clients for my therapeutic approach. I utilize humor, curiosity, unconditional love, and my quirky personality (thanks, ADHD!) to connect with others and develop an authentic space for vulnerability. If you are looking to heal from the roots up while discovering yourself- I'm here to embark on that journey with you.

It's not whats wrong with you, it's whats happened to you. I believe that our past plays a significant role in our present. Genetics, environments we grew up in, and life experiences all have ways of creating patterns of thoughts and behaviors. When people have a safe, nonjudgmental space to explore their thoughts and feelings, they can begin to process the experiences, gain understanding of themselves, and start healing. I pull from CBT, DBT, client centered therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness practices, and psychoeducation to help clients gain awareness, understanding, and tools to move forward from the past.

Mindful Tides Therapy was formed to provide an atmosphere for our clients to individualize their goals. We recognized the decrease in quality client care through the “big box” therapy practices that are owned by those who are not clinicians themselves, and it was important for us to provide a safe space for clients to have input into their treatment plans. Our goal is to aid our clients in finding a secure, collaborative, compassionate, and ethical therapy environment. It is a priority for us to provide our team of therapists with the training and work and life balance they need to practice comfortably.

All of our life experiences shape us into the people we become, however, at one point or another in most of our lives, we question the direction that we are going and if our lives are as joyful and enriched as possible. Through self-exploration and addressing unresolved problems, individuals can take control of their futures. Let’s talk about that process!

Overcoming challenges while learning about yourself and your own resilience through therapy can be some of the most healing work. I understand the value of looking at challenges through the lens of trauma and how that affects all aspects of life. I have a passion for working with adolescents and athletes, as well as couples and parents. I am originally from Nicaragua and am able to conduct full sessions in Spanish, if needed.

Bipolar Disorder Therapists

What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?

Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?

Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?

Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
