I am a licensed clinical social worker who has been providing counseling and therapy services to youth and their families for over 40 years. While I do see adults in psychotherapy as part of my private practice, I primarily work with older children, adolescents, and young adults, and their families. I have extensive experience with the range of problems and issues that youth encounter, including anxiety, depression, impulsivity, excessive anger, self-esteem erosion, and relational difficulties, and have a particular expertise in working with youth who present with neuro-diversity and learning struggles.

I am a board-certified neuropsychologist with specialized training in understanding how neurological, developmental, and medical conditions affect children, teens', and young adults', and their families. I work with families to understand their concerns and use evidence-based approaches to evaluate the dynamic relationship between the brain, and an individual’s thoughts, behavior, learning, emotions, culture, and environment. Armed with this information, I work with families and others (teachers, doctors) to identify specific next steps. The goal is greater joy, fulfillment, purpose, satisfaction, and connectedness.

Regardless of learning style or circumstances, our thoughts can define and limit ALL of us.
If you’ve found your way here, there’s a good chance you’re considering making a change in your life, beginning a new endeavor, searching for way to help someone you care about, or simply feeling “stuck”. The struggle IS real and it could be happening at home, at work, at school, in an important relationship, or within yourself. No one said life would or should be easy. But I believe that with the proper support and some hard work, every individual is capable of great things. As an award winning educator, counselor, coach, author, and mentor I have the skills, patience, and resources to help you change your life.

The process of finding a psychologist who is a good fit for either yourself or a family member can be overwhelming and frustrating. I make it a point to ensure that clients who reach out to me feel heard and understood. Therapy can only be effective if it is a collaborative process in which clients feel they have a say in their own treatment. I mainly practice from a cognitive-behavioral perspective (CBT), but I also use other modalities in sessions in order to best meet the needs of my clients.

One of the hardest parts of being neurodiverse is living in a world full of people who don’t get you. This can make us neurodiverse folks feel rejected, alone, and unworthy, which then creates many more mental health concerns. But, ironically, when we go to therapy for these problems, we are often met by a neurotypical therapist who doesn’t understand us either! As a neurodiverse therapist myself, I provide a level of personal understanding that, coupled with my years of education and experience, allows me to empower you to overcome mental health concerns that hold you back.

To others, your teen or young adult appears to have it all - they are bright, accomplished, and successful. Yet beneath the surface they're grappling with anxiety that impacts their schoolwork and relationships. Perhaps they're struggling with focus, sleep, anger, or avoidance of certain tasks or situations. They may worry about college acceptance or falling short of having the career and life they envision. Often they feel burdened by the weight of effort or achievements that they perceive as never good enough. They’re ready to make a change - they want to feel relaxed, confident, and more fulfilled.

I believe that everyone needs a "non-judgmental safe-space person to talk to." I enjoy being “that person.” I see you and hear you and I also provide mental, school/academic, organizational, relational/social, and behavioral support. For example, students may want to discuss issues they are having at school, young adults may want to process relationships or careers, or parents may want support as they raise their children and navigate the school system. Many concerns lead us to look for support. Feel free to reach out to see if I can assist you as well.

Education and Learning Disabilities Therapists

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
