Using a CBT and strength-based approach we will discover the links between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and work towards healing the mind-body connection.
As a black woman I know what it means to provide a safe space, healing, and comfort for everyone else except yourself. As a black woman I know what it means to put everyone else’s needs before your own, and to keep going even when you have nothing left to give. As a black woman I know the importance of carrying the “strong black woman” label with you. But what if I told you that being strong could have a different meaning than what you have been taught? What if I told you that being strong could also mean putting your needs first and making time for yourself?

As a parent, it can be difficult to know if or why your child is struggling. For younger kids, behavioral issues such as tantrums, extreme shyness, aggression, defiance, social or school issues are actually signs of anxiety, depression, grief, or low self esteem. We work with kids ages 5 and up, using play therapy and other engaging techniques to connect with your child on their level. Similarly, for adolescents, too mental health struggles can be dismissed as "teen angst." We work with adolescents ages 10-19 struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, anger, ADHD, eating disorders, self esteem and more.

Therapy can be a space for healing, empowerment, and growth, but starting that process can be difficult and takes a lot of courage. As a therapist, I believe that building a strong therapeutic relationship is a key component to creating a safe, accepting environment from which you can heal and grow. I work together with my clients to relieve the pain that has brought them to this moment, while also helping promote true healing through deeper reflection of their life experiences while incorporating history, culture, and identity.

Everyone’s loss and grief is unique, and yet loss and grief are universal human experiences. There is no one right way to grieve. No universal stages or timetables. No specific coping strategies that are effective for everyone. Yet most people who have experienced a significant loss, have much in common and are able to find ways to cope with their loss and able to reinvest in life. We will find coping strategies that will work for you, positive ways to stay connected to your deceased loved one, and increase meaningful activity and interactions with others.

When human beings experience distress or severe life stressors, it is not unusual for their lives to unravel. My significant desire is creating therapeutic interventions to individuals who have been through a traumatic/stressful experience. I help my clients, who include children, adults, and families, to find healthy visions of themselves and aid their relationships. I know that no single method is the right one for every individual, and so I have experience in a range of modalities including TF-CBT, CBT, Motivational Interviewing.

I am glad you found me. You are not alone, nor do not have to journey through this next chapter alone. Life can be filled with seasons of suffering, pain and change that too often result in anxiety, depression, trauma, disconnection and isolation. All of us can face these seasons in life that are highly difficult, but within these experiences it is possible to find deep resilience, healing and growth. I am passionate about helping individuals, couples and families create a path forward towards the life and relationships that you envision with yourself, your partner or your family. I would love to join you in this.

I know firsthand how challenging it can be to experience anxiety, depression, loss, eating disorders and trauma. I know how hard it can be to move out of a shame/guilt spiral, reevaluate your relationships and everything you’ve known about your life so far. I know what it’s like to suffer with something alone and feeling terrified to share it with anyone else from fear of being misunderstood, rejected, shamed, etc.

Welcome! My name is Elizabeth Roy, Psy.D. I am currently a psychology associate at the Rowan Center for Behavioral Medicine. Navigating life with a chronic illness or disability may present many challenges including adjusting to what a new "normal" may look like. Many individuals I work with wish to get back to enjoying activities and spending time with friends and family like they used to. Therapy can offer a collaborative space to process the emotions associated with a change of this nature as well as offer a space to problem-solve ways to move towards living a life that is meaningful and fulfilling to you.

I provide support, insight and respect for my client's individual needs, strengths, struggles and experience. Therapy is a collaborative process. I believe that the client is an expert on their own lives whose openness and honesty is essential in healing and growing. That's why it is so important to build a strong, trusting relationship . My approach is laid back, but I will confront and challenge when necessary. I am very passionate about helping people heal, find acceptance while changing the things they can. I only ask that you be open to the process and help me help you.

I am experienced and eager to help individuals and couples who want to make positive changes in their lives or cope with life stressors more effectively by use of cognitive-behavioral and problem-solving therapy and positive psychology. Therapy is intended to be goal-oriented and short-term. Couples are guided to regain intimate and personal connections they once had that may have been compromised by life stressors, infidelity, chronic or acute illness, parenting, age, sexual dysfunction, or simply growing apart. I aim to help people decrease distress, improve communication and problem solving, increase intimacy, and improve quality of life.

I believe that true mastery of ourselves is within each and every one of us. Each person is unique and this means they have something to offer the world. Sometimes it is a matter of getting out of your own way to see just how unique you really are. I have many years of experience working with people with a wide range of challenges. We will collaboratively work to utilize your strengths and enhance your coping skills. I work with each individual in addressing their primary challenges by constructing an individual goal plan that is in accordance with conquering your biggest challenges and becoming the best version of yourself.

Life throws a lot our way, right? Work dilemmas, family stuff, that nagging feeling you haven't quite figured it all out. Maybe life feels overwhelming right now? Whatever is on your mind, I'm here to tell you that you don't have to go it alone. This won’t feel overwhelming clinical, and it won’t be a vent session either (unless you want it to be). Our time together will help bring clarity and perspective to equip you with the skills and strategies you need to flourish. We are not just going to talk. We'll work together to find solutions and build the concrete skills you need to thrive.

Strength-Based Therapists

How does strength-based therapy work?

During strength-based therapy sessions, the therapist will ask about an individual’s experiences of stress, pain, or trauma with the goal of orienting the client to view themselves as a survivor rather than a victim, and focusing on their strengths rather than on their weaknesses. In framing a client’s personal narrative along these lines, the therapist and client work together to identify existing skills that can be harnessed.

Is strength-based therapy evidence-based?

Strength-based therapy is an evidence-based treatment that has been studied extensively and shown to be effective across domains. The treatment has been found to be particularly effective in helping individuals who are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health concerns. Strength-based therapy has been used by therapists to help clients for more than 60 years.

How long does strength-based therapy last?

There’s no precise timeline for strength-based therapy. The duration of treatment depends on the individual’s specific needs and goals and the severity of their concerns. Some individuals may find they achieve their therapeutic goals quickly, while others might benefit from ongoing support and guidance in order to continue progressing.

How effective is strength-based therapy?

Clinical research and decades of practice have shown strength-based therapy to be an effective treatment to improve mental health and well-being for many conditions. The treatment can engender a sense of connection and collaboration between the therapist and the individual, fostering a positive therapeutic relationship. For individuals with narcissistic tendencies, strength-based therapy may be less effective, as the focus on the individual’s strengths may undermine the work needed to honestly assess the challenges the individual faces.
