I help people navigate through complex medical and psychological conditions. Often times a diagnosis of cancer, diabetes, infertility, chronic pain/fatigue leaves us confused, frustrated and powerless. Medical health setbacks can impact our mental health. Conditions that may occur or worsen include: depression, anxiety, substance dependency, interpersonal conflict and relationship issues. This is not always truth. Many find their voice, their personal strength, and their love and compassion of self and others deepen.

I have been in full-time practice as a clinical social worker/psychotherapist since 1969, and practiced in both hospital and agency psychiatric settings for over 15 years, in addition to maintaining a private practice. Throughout my career, I have provided numerous national and regional training seminars and workshops for MH professionals on women's issues; the chronically mentally ill; dual-diagnosed populations; and group psychotherapy modalities, and have also published in these areas. I have an eclectic style that encourages a flexible and collaborative working partnership which reflects the needs, goals, and personal context of the individual person.

Making the decision to reach out for support or guidance isn’t easy. You might be going through a difficult life transition, experiencing relationship problems, feeling depressed or anxious, or struggling to manage life stressors. Therapy can be a great opportunity to explore long-standing problems and to work through current challenges in the safety of a nurturing, non-judgmental environment.

As a part of therapy, I work with clients to understand themselves and their awareness of their internal world, which can strengthen their relationships with others. We are told a lot of things growing up about who we are. I like to challenge these expectations to explore what values authentically fit for you. What have you outgrown for the person you want to become? Often, we take for granted aspects about our experience, which can be resources of strength in overcoming hardships. I use an integrative approach that takes into account your values, cultural practices, and beliefs in how you view the world and sources of distresses.

I believe we are all capable of changing our lives to feel happier more of the time. Perhaps you are struggling with a big transition, such as the death of a loved one, getting married or divorced, having a child, changing careers, or coming out. Or maybe you just feel stuck and you're not sure why. New clients often say that they are frustrated because they would like to feel happier but can't seem to figure out how. Therapy helps people break out of the rut and find new ways to achieve contentment.

I believe that therapy is a co-created process meant to bring awareness within ourselves and our relationships to create meaningful change. I believe that everyone has the natural capacity to have a fulfilling and desired quality of life. Healing comes into play to meet life’s obstacles so that growth and integration can happen. I look at relative trauma as well as the impact of larger systems. I use mind-body awareness practices to help bring alignment within authentic self. I work to bring non-judgment and trust as transformation occurs. I look to help you explore within yourself, in relationships, families, and society.

Are you giving so much to others that you've lost sight of who you are? If putting others first has left you feeling disconnected from your own needs and desires, I might be the therapist for you! Many of us have been conditioned to believe that prioritizing ourselves is "selfish." You might feel guilty for wanting a break from work, your partner, or your kids. Asking for help balancing everything can feel impossible, as if you should already have it all figured out. But there's a reason you're scrolling through Psychology Today right now— constantly giving to others is taking its toll!

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
