Therapy is a process of cultivating a relationship where we can collaborate to create meaningful change in your life. Perhaps you've felt depressed, overwhelmed, stuck; maybe you can’t quite articulate the feeling yet. You could be anxiously on the precipice of an unfamiliar juncture, or stumped by a recurring, unresolved pattern. These experiences can leave us unsettled, questioning who we are and how to make sense of it all. Wherever you find yourself now, pursuing therapy is a brave step into the unknown, into discovering something about you that can help you to live more fully and freely.

I start with a thorough assessment of your current concerns. I take a broad-minded, non-judgmental approach to understanding what you are looking for help with. I try to be helpful by offering feedback and new perspectives and insights. I understand that you have probably already attempted several ways to address your concerns and by now you are most likely frustrated and worried. I will take a proactive and positive approach to your participation by helping you identify your personal strengths and assets that you can then use to develop a new and better response to your concerns.

I specialize in supporting people who have experienced trauma, whether this be a single event, or repeated or chronic experiences throughout their childhood or life. I also work with people who having difficulties managing their mood (e.g. experiencing depression or anxiety) and understanding the role of experiences in shaping their sense of self and identity. I can work with people to process hard life experiences, creating a space to be heard or challenged, but also to develop practical skills to better cope with their difficulties (e.g. improving motivation, managing anxiety, reducing "unhelpful coping" such as substance misuse).

I believe psychotherapy should be simple and accessible; theories are important yet your own experience is the best teacher. Similarly, connecting with my clients on a deeply relational level and developing an understanding of who you are is as integral to the process as the clinical training which informs my therapeutic approach. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor who emphasizes existential concerns at the heart of the issues that bring people into therapy. Some examples include creating a more meaningful existence, exercising personal freedom/choice, and developing a greater sense of responsibility for one's growth.

As humans, we are wired for connection with one another and sometimes it can be challenging to let down our defenses and open up to others. I believe that being in therapy will allow you to understand your vulnerabilities, identify troublesome patterns, and make concrete changes in the present that will carry into the future. My areas of specialty include relationship concerns, communication, and sex/intimacy issues as well as conflict resolution.

As I experience all the shifts life has to offer, I have developed more of an understanding of the value in considering others and my own mindset. Problems, uncertainty, and challenges are not going away; they are always going to be in our lives. The thought things must always be set in stone is an illusion from the start. However, if we change our mindset and change those same problems, uncertainty, and challenges into growth moments without limitations or limiting beliefs and focus on solutions; we are left feeling empowered to create change, and I am excited to go on the journey with you.

We spend most of our time talking to ourselves. In therapy, we explore that narrative to help you feel more at peace. It is hard at first and once you find your confidence, you will notice significant changes in how you interact with yourself and the world; AND how the world interacts with you! I work with people who want a trusting and collaborative relationship built over time. I use a holistic and multicultural approach to better understand your unique experiences and provide treatment that is effective and ethical.

Finding a therapist is a challenging, yet courageous step. Maybe it is hard to find the words to express what is wrong. Or, you have the words but no one to share them with. It can be difficult to trust that someone will understand you. I welcome you to reach out. I work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, grief, complex trauma, low self-esteem, shame, and struggling with emerging adulthood and identity. I understand the pervasive impact of childhood trauma and complex family dynamics. It is painful to long for connection and to feel unsafe or uneasy in the presence of others.

Starting your therapy journey can be anxiety provoking and intimidating. I commend you for taking this important step to show up for yourself. I believe that presenting symptoms are adaptive and protective forms of coping that you have learned over time. We are influenced and impacted by the many contexts in which we live, whether that be familial systems or systems of oppression. Uncovering root causes to symptoms and gently diving deeper into self awareness and understanding of your past and present experiences will be the cornerstone of our time together.

My goal, when working with families, couples, or individuals, is to provide the tools needed that will create the change you are seeking. I am a strong believer that starting with small tangible goals will lead to a greater change. What makes working with me a rewarding experience is that while creating an authentic and safe place, I'm not an expert in the room. You are the expert of your own life, and I'm here for support, Not to judge or create pressure.

Many of us go through life unaware of the causes of our uncomfortable emotions or harmful behaviors. These unexplainable emotions and actions may contribute to relationship issues, other disruptions in life, and even anxiety or despair. Counselors are specially trained to listen and comprehend in ways that support deepening clients’ self-awareness. Through therapy, clients can learn helpful tools to make sense of emotions and behaviors that get in the way of thriving in life. I truly believe that we can start to see things differently and with greater accuracy once we have a deeper understanding of ourselves.

How can I find a therapist in Loop, Chicago?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
