I am a clinical social worker with passion for trauma and mood disorders. I use a collaborative approach with clients and support systems to address challenges with mood, suicidal ideation, self-harm, anxiety and other behaviors that are no longer serving your needs. I enjoy clients who can be vulnerable, who want to do things differently, and who are willing to be challenged. Bonus points if you use humor to cope and want to listen to music and color in session.

My education focused primarily on sensitive topics including: suicidal ideation, self-harm, abuse, grief, and relationship issues.
Hi there, I'm Courtney, and I'm here to provide a safe and supportive environment for young individuals to feel understood & valued. I primarily see clients ages 10-24, and their caregivers. Most individuals I work with have experienced painful life events, thus changing the way they interpret and react to their environment. Trauma & grief can alter the mind to "keep us safe", even using unfavored behaviors or emotions to do it. This can create a cycle in which clients feel "out of control", and because the brain has taken over to protect them, they are. We work together to regain control of the inner systems with healing & empathy.

Kids and teens have difficult and confusing things happen and need a space to process so they can move forward with freedom, confidence, and hope. You are not alone in looking for support for your child. Most kids don't want to sit still and talk about their feelings. They want to be heard and seen and have fun. We keep this in mind as combine various research based methods such as play therapy, sand tray therapy, wilderness therapy and interactive feedback to create a personalized intentional experience that is engaging, fun, and healing. I'm also Christian and my office is housed on a church campus.

I have experience working with self harm and suicidal thinking, depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, and relationship dynamics.
I believe that the experiences we go through in life shape us, the people around us impact us, and I believe that the process of growing is a life long journey. I practice psychodynamic therapy informed by person centered ways of relating. That’s just a fancy way to say that I think your life impacts who you are, how you behave and feel, and that an empathetic, supportive relationship is the best place to work on the change you want to see.

I myself have journeyed through traumatic experience, anxiety, and depression (with suicidal thoughts at times).
One of the most amazing things about human beings is our ability to heal, physically, emotionally and spiritually. That being said, sometimes we all find ourselves "stuck", unsure of how we continue on. And while we all wish we could "pull ourselves up by the bootstraps", sometimes we just can't. I understand, I myself have lived this, wondering if I would ever truly be "healthy." If you find yourself in that spot, or maybe you just find that you are in need of a "tune up" I would love to work with you!

Our mental health practice includes online psychiatry, mental health therapy, and care for patients who have suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
I became a mental health therapist because I’m passionate about supporting and encouraging others. I think it’s essential that therapists help patients build a greater sense of self-awareness and self-acceptance. I believe mental wellness is rooted in the ability to understand, accept, and appreciate ourselves with love and respect.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
