Psychodynamic (Jungian) orientation: Just as the conscious mind, the unconscious mind can be directional.
Everyone needs to talk about their personal concerns, emotions, and life challenges. At times, it is best to talk to someone who is not a friend or family member. I provide a place and process for these personal conversations. I will support you as you resolve old issues and emotional blocks, find new insights and choices, develop new ways of coping and acting. I am interactive and supportive. I work with individuals experiencing stress/anxiety/trauma; depression; childhood and relationship issues; life transitions - divorce, the death of someone important, illness, and transitions of midlife or becoming an elder; ADHD.

My approach prioritizes a psychodynamic and relational frame, though I draw from mindfulness and cognitive approaches to empower my clients with tools along this often abstract, meandering path that is the work.
Perhaps you were raised in an environment that prioritizes mental health and is supportive of psychotherapy. Conversely, and as often the case, you were taught from caregivers that it was "weak" or "shameful" to obtain professional support, or to even seek help outside of yourself. These sentiments still permeate our culture, and though they are shifting, I find that they still lurk and impact one's drive to pursue mental health care. So in either case (and for all others in between), getting here was a process. In this spirit, I want to commend you for taking this huge and vulnerable step toward healing and deeper self-awareness!

The quality of the client/therapist relationship is key for a successful therapeutic process. I follow a relational psychodynamic approach based upon your unique strengths and challenges. As a therapist, I am here to walk beside you in your healing journey, providing support and tools best suited to your individual goals. My philosophy is holistic, and I recognize and work with connections between the physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual aspects of experience. I am influenced by the work of Carl Jung, who explored the importance of symbolic meaning and bringing unconscious motivations into awareness.

I practice psychodynamic / psychoanalytic psychotherapy, the original and most developed tradition of psychotherapy, which works relationally and in-depth, aiming for fundamental change. Recurrent emotional pain is calling for us to reconnect to our true self. It is very uncomfortable to be with all of our experience, yet avoiding feeling cuts us off from the authentic meaning and movement that we need to meet suffering with grace and growth.

I utilize an integrative approach to therapy including Psychodynamic, Depth Psychology, CBT, and EMDR.
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist dedicated to providing compassionate and supportive counseling/psychotherapy. I work with individuals both long and short term. Wanting to understand why adverse or difficult things happen to us is natural. When one can contribute a sense of meaning to a difficult situation the power of the problem is often integrated and diminishes. Therapy is a process that can help an individual find the transformational quality in their adverse experiences and become empowered, instead of overwhelmed by them.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
