The people I love working with are adults from minority populations, including LGBTQIA+, African American, Hispanic, and other underserved communities, who are seeking to enhance their resilience during challenging life phases.
Greetings! I'm Brynn Shaver, a dedicated Licensed Professional Counselor Associate, originally hailing from Asheville, North Carolina, now nestled in the beautiful landscapes of Bend, Oregon. My professional journey has been deeply influenced by my own experiences with eating disorders, religious trauma, relationship trauma, and a journey of identity exploration. These experiences have shaped my understanding of the complexities of the human experience and have motivated me to pursue a career in therapy. Through my personal struggles and identity exploration, I've gained invaluable insights into the challenges individuals face.

I help leaders overcome self-doubt, reject negative anti-Black messages, and protect their emotional health while advancing their careers.
I assist Corporate Attorneys and Executives in carefully assessing whether their problem drinking truly qualifies as a significant issue, if the ultimatum from their significant other is genuinely warranted, and how they can successfully navigate finding a harmonious balance between socializing over drinks with co-workers and dedicating quality time to family. I also specialize in supporting BIPOC millennial leaders who have relocated to OR for career advancement and are struggling to navigate a predominately white work. I assist adult transracial adoptees and their caregivers in navigating the complex emotions of cross adoption.

As a Black biracial woman I understand the impact of lived experience on our healing.
You're looking to be understood in your experience. You struggle with questioning if you are the issue or if it's the world around you. You live and work in high-stress and demanding environments where you're underrepresented. You've begun to realize your old ways of coping aren't working the same anymore. You may have even tried standard talk therapy in the past - and while helpful - you still find yourself troubled by disturbing experiences or memories.

As a Black, non-binary, transracial adoptee, identity work is the name of my game. I often work with BIPOC and/or gender non-conforming individuals including children, pre-teens, and adults. I focus my clinical work in supporting those navigating challenges that arise from identity work: racial, gender, familial, societal, etc. The subject of adoption is particularly close to my heart and one that holds much nuance and intricacy. We may be a good fit if you are looking to explore any of the aforementioned or are the parent and/or guardian of the aforementioned. Please contact me using the "my website" link or visit crybaby.care.

I am drawn to work with adults healing from abuse, trauma, and systemic oppression. I also enjoy supporting couples navigate relationship conflict, attachment wounds, and exploring their relationship scripts. As a queer, biracial (Black/white), DVSA survivor, I’m passionate about providing a space for QTBIPOC individuals and survivors of sexual and relationship violence. I’m particularly interested in finding healing outside of carceral systems. I can hold your stories, your fear, your pain - you are not too much.

As a black male, I also enjoy working with marginalized populations seeking support.
I am currently accepting new clients (Updated July 2024). I understand it is difficult to seek help. Often, the idea of therapy can feel overwhelming, especially if it is the first time. I strive to make the therapeutic process comfortable and accessible. I use a direct style of therapy and evidence-based approaches and help clients take an active approach to making change in their lives. I work to build upon the strengths you already have and help you continue to live a more valued life.

Our clients identify as Black/African-American, Asian, Caucasian, Multiracial, BIPOC, Middle Eastern, Hispanic/Latino.
On the outside, it seems like you have it all together, but inside, you feel stressed and overwhelmed. You've heard that bottling up emotions isn't healthy, but what else can you do? Your to-do list is endless, and so many people depend on you. Your own needs always take a back seat and when you try to set boundaries, you end up feeling guilty, anxious, or depressed. Sometimes you wonder what you truly want, but you're so disconnected from yourself that it's hard to know. You thought you'd feel more in control of your life by now and worry that something's wrong because you don't. Deep down, you fear you might not measure up.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
