Jungian psychology & dreamwork complement modern psychoanalytic perspectives.
Do you feel anxious too much of the time? Exhausted, disconnected, without purpose or interest? Do you forfeit your own thoughts and feelings in relationship to others? Would you like to deal with difficulties more effectively than the unconscious impulses to comply, defy or flee? Whether it's a distinct problem or a vague discontent that needs resolution, I hold the space to illuminate, guide and empower your progression. This is where talk is strong medicine. Neuroscience reveals that therapy changes brain chemistry & structure. Habitual patterns fall away to a renewed sense of energy, choice and personal authority.

Human Nature has adapted, grown and embraced change throughout our history. As an adult, or couple in a relationship, you can explore tools to meet your specific needs. By identifying old triggers and tapes, you can let go of what you have outgrown. Your previous strengths can carry you from who you have been, to who you choose to be. With this old resilience, you can allow change and expand your experiences. You can step forward toward a new vision of you. Choose a "do-over". Learn to accept your changes with self-compassion and a renewed curiosity for self expression. Move from resistance to acceptance to simple joys.

I have over 20 years of clinical experience and am trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
Therapy is an opportunity for personal development in a safe, nonjudgmental, respectful, private, and supportive environment. It is natural to feel overwhelmed at times and it is not a sign of weak character to seek help. Through therapy we can learn to manage our emotions more effectively, improve our relationships and communication, bolster our confidence and self-esteem, and minimize our distress. In my work, I strive to create a comfortable environment in which I can assist clients in identifying thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and recurring patterns of behavior that may be impinging on the capacity to experience and create a fuller, more satisfying life.

I draw from psychoanalytic and attachment theories, paying attention to one's relationship with self/other, early experiences, and the sociopolitical milieu.
Hello, I am a licensed clinical psychologist in MA & OR. Before becoming a psychologist, I worked as a public interest attorney, and as a psychologist, I see the importance of being mindful of social context in the therapy room. I specialize in psychodynamic psychotherapy -an evidence-based treatment- to illuminate how the past and present, external and internal, mutually influence one another. I also integrate tools from other therapy modalities to support the unique needs of each individual.

I work with people having a wide range of concerns. Areas of specialty include identity formation, relationship dynamics, loss, and issues of spirituality (both questioning and growth). I work especially well with persons who are curious about themselves and their ways of interacting with the world. I practice relationally-based psychoanalytic psychotherapy; meaning that, where relevant, we talk about relationships in your life impacting your way of navigating the world. We have each found ways to survive our world as best we can; at some point, we may consider wanting to shift these ways because they do not work as well as they once did.

I practice psychodynamic / psychoanalytic psychotherapy, the original and most developed tradition of psychotherapy, which works relationally and in-depth, aiming for fundamental change. Recurrent emotional pain is calling for us to reconnect to our true self. It is very uncomfortable to be with all of our experience, yet avoiding feeling cuts us off from the authentic meaning and movement that we need to meet suffering with grace and growth.

I believe psychoanalytic psychotherapy is best in fostering this.
People often seek out therapy when they are in relief of mental and emotional pain. I believe much of this pain is rooted in attachment failures in childhood which then branch out into how you see yourself, relate to others, etc. Ways you may have managed this pain no longer seem to be working. This crisis of sorts is an opportunity for deeper understanding, acceptance and transformation. Therapy can be a vehicle for achieving this. My areas of focus are: mood disorders, trauma, self-esteem, anxiety and relational difficulties. I tend to work well with clients who are open, curious and motivated for change.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
