Hello. Many people seek a therapist when they’re feeling stuck, are in the middle of a change, want to challenge their growth edge, or feeling alone or disconnected. Internal and external dynamics contribute to a sense of discomfort and innumerable signs and symptoms, which are meant to catch our attention. My approach to therapy is to support and guide you to listen deeply to the meaning of those experiences, increase your sense of connection to yourself and others, and build practices that strengthen your willingness and ability to access ease, connection, and compassion.

Accepting New Clients: Finding the right provider when you're struggling with substance abuse or a co-occurring disorder can be a daunting task, but I would like to take the fear and shame out of the process and let you know that change is possible if you're willing to take the first step. You may be someone seeking help for the first time or someone who has struggled with issues in the past, but no matter what brought you to this place, I would like to be an ally in your journey toward wellness. Client-centered therapy means that you get to be in control of the process, and I respect an individual's right to maintain autonomy.

As a therapist I strongly believe in attunement and connection as being imperative to feel seen and validated which encourages growth and healing. Being witnessed allows us to deeply process issues, identify and attune to our individual needs to make progress toward your self identified goals. Intrinsically, we have the tools to promote integration and wellness, but may require support, and experience validation in order to flourish.

Does life feel overwhelming like being trapped in a never-ending maze? Having these feelings are perfectly normal. Talking through the life concerns or worries can help but it’s hard to share deep personal concerns with family or friends. The pressure of family, work, or past trauma's can cause anxiety, stress, even depression. Whether dealing with a difficult relationship, career, or life challenges talking with a trained professional, who is caring and compassionate can help you find freedom and start enjoying life. Think about how great it would be living life instead of just making it through each day.

I believe each individual holds the tools, and wisdom to uncover their unique purpose. Traumatic experiences and life transitions can derail our sense of self and purpose. Maybe you or a loved one have experienced events that result in feeling adrift, unsure, confused, or overwhelmed. Working with a clinician can shed light on unrecognized patterns and dormant aspects of self in a safe and empathic relationship. I partner with my clients to craft a learning environment, where together, we can identify inner resources and and with proper support build the skills necessary to navigate complex challenges.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
