I view therapy as having the ability to assist clients in unlocking the innate internal resources needed to promote individual and systemic growth, leading to meaningful change. I implore a liberatory approach by analyzing the client’s context within the systems theory framework and the effects of interpersonal interactions on the client. I aim to provide a safe and inclusive therapeutic environment to support client’s mental health regardless of cultural or personal identities such as race, gender, or sexual orientation.

Coey believes that we thrive when we can engage in experiences of safety, acceptance, and creative agency, and we adapt to survive and make sense of events even when our options and resources seem limited. Their approach integrates the evidencebased theoretical framework of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with supportive responses from other modalities. Their main areas of focus include affirmative care for the LGBT community; exploration and navigation of life transitions; and mindful selfadvocacy in response to experiences associated with anxiety, depression, and trauma.

It is crucial that our work be centered in your values, beliefs, background, and culture(s). We cannot fully envision where we would like to go without solidly acknowledging where we come from, and there is no homogenized way to do this. I see social justice and mental health as inextricable, and my work as a therapist is and will always be rooted in the values of accessibility and equal opportunity. I am a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and am happy to support trans folx with gender affirming care. The best way to reach out is through email.

Clients often come to me to work on issues related to perfectionism, identity, relational challenges, grief and loss and existential concerns. My approach is direct, caring, and humanistic and reflects values of collaboration, transparency, and trust. Therapy is an investment in your growth and personal development, the foundations of which are a solid relationship between the therapist and client. As a clinical social worker, an understanding of the systemic nature of mental health concerns is a key part of my practice.

As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, I am dedicated to helping my peers and allies rise from the destructive forces of stigma and oppression. Using strengths-based and person-centered foundations, I believe that you are beautiful and powerful at your core. I use various methodologies within an intersubjective relational framework and from a postmodern perspective (you are the expert of your own life; I am merely a vehicle for you to explore). I am a Feminist and a Jungian-influenced therapist who honors the multidimensional ‘beyond’ and in-between the divine feminine and masculine.

Now accepting PacificSource (Oregon): You are super kind and nice, except inside, you want more. You anticipate everyone's needs and everyone around you feels taken care of by you. Yet, when no one is looking, you feel frazzled and a little resentful. Others are happy while you feel guilty for setting limits. So you don't. Expressing your needs and desires, creating space for yourself feels selfish. Planting flowers? No creative energy. You keep giving because it's just a little thing to do for them and won't take but a minute. Asking for help, or taking time for your desires, makes you feel guilty, or even embarrassed.

I believe that all people have the potential to change. Making changes to yourself can be a confusing process that brings up some of the deepest insecurities, weaknesses, and pain. Together we can make space for those tough feelings to surface and we can work collaboratively to discover your strengths to empower you on your healing journey. I approach counseling from a humanistic perspective that honors your worldview and sees you as the expert in your life. I value authentic connections and seek to empower all I come in contact with.

Sometimes our thoughts, our feelings, and our circumstance can be hard to put together. When we try to connect with others, or we have no one to connect with, we’re left feeling misunderstood and lost. A memory that we have a hard time letting go of, a loss of energy, seemingly with no explanation behind it. Trauma, grief, loss. These burdens can build up over time. Having a partner as we journey through and process these experiences can be invaluable in finding peace within ourselves and our story.

Transgender Therapists
As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.
What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.
How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.
How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
