As a trauma and PTSD specialist with training in Brainspotting, biofeedback, polyvagal theory, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness behavioral therapy I assist in processing the distressing memories and feelings that may have resulted from your unique life experience.
Just as we need air to breathe and survive, we need connection and compassion to heal and thrive. I believe your mental health is just as important as other aspects of your health and dealing with feelings like anger, shame, ambivalence, and loneliness isn’t something you should have to do alone. At times we need to talk and reflect on our issues, other times we need to make direct changes to our circumstances and lifestyles. In either case, I am happily honored to be your counselor and meet your needs while dealing with the uncertainty, depression, anxiety, or disconnection that comes with the struggle of being human.

Although I prioritize narrative, attachment, somatic and internal family systems (IFS) approaches and believe in the power of self-compassion, mindfulness, creativity, and imagination, I also incorporate aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and solutions-focused and psychodynamic therapies to meet clients’ needs.
I know that seeking out and beginning one’s therapy journey requires a great deal of courage. The clients I work with generally arrive facing tremendously challenging life events that often leave them feeling overwhelmed, helpless, bereaved, and even broken. My main priority as a clinician is to provide a safe, compassionate, non-judgmental space where you feel supported and can imagine and realize new possibilities. Your stories, life experiences, strengths and weaknesses, spiritualities, and identities will be witnessed, honored, and respected.

I am a licensed psychologist who utilizes mindfulness-based therapies in my approach to treatment. I have worked with many patients experiencing varied mental health concerns, including anxiety, OCD, depression, grief, eating disorders, sleep disorders and acute stress. Together, we will work to identify what you value in life and explore ways for you to engage in a way that is aligned with your valued outcome. Typically, what lands people in my office is a gap between how they are living their lives and how they want to be living their lives. Our work together would focus on closing this gap.

I work from a lens of compassionate curiosity and use an integrative tool kit of mindfulness, meditation, grounding techniques, somatic tools, CBT, DBT and exploratory processing.
You deserve to feel empowered in your daily life- to be the one who confidently shows up for yourself in times of difficulty. I believe empowerment happens through a better understanding of the ways stress and trauma manifests in our minds/bodies. I seek to support those who experience barriers to empowerment, through the use of tools for stress management/mood regulation, self advocacy and healthy communication. I work primarily with anxiety, depression, life transitions, trauma, and relational stress. Together, we will question and challenge old stories, thoughts and behaviors that hold you back from embodying your empowered self.

In my practice, I use time-tested techniques involving mindfulness and breathing that can help interrupt those dysfunctional responses when you find yourself challenged.
My goal in therapy is to help you achieve a deeper understanding of why you may struggle to cope with stress and anxiety or make the desired behavioral changes you identify as needed in your life. I will work with you to explore your goals and motives, while learning about the neurobiological underpinnings of what we understand as our human "fight, flight of freeze" responses, which can often sabotage our ability to respond in ways that avoid exacerbating our situation and/or damaging our relationships with others. Together we will explore how you can learn to identify and short-circuit your emotional triggers.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
