At some point in our lives, most of us find ourselves in need of supportive help from another person, whether we are struggling with tangled relationships, overwhelming feelings, difficult choices, losses and/or afflictions. Sometimes we don't even know exactly what we need, just that life isn't working out for us in some way. My desire is to work together with you to identify your needs/goals, explore possible paths of growth and/or change, process the feelings that accompany those explorations, and develop your personal resources (which might include family, faith, friendships, etc.).

I use a combination of cognitive-behavioral, dialectical behavioral, and Internal Family Systems modalities to assist clients in developing the skills and tools needed to achieve their desired goals.
I work with adults and adolescents 16 and over. In my 19 years as an individual and family therapist, I have found that people can experience profound change and transformation amidst some of the most challenging circumstances. While pain and discomfort are inevitable in life, suffering comes about when we become stuck in our pain, and are unable to see how to move through difficulties. My approach is one of building a relationship with clients based on trust and a desire to improve their life situation.

My ideal client is an adult or mature teen who is serious about change. They don't need to know what they want; they can be afraid. They can be tired, and lack confidence, but when they come see me, they are ready to eliminate barriers, resist rigid thought patterns and become something amazing. They show up and work-eagerly. They read the books I suggest, they listen to the podcasts, they take the strategies we create and they use them outside of session-so they get better. Life changes as they change, and, eventually, they have no need to come back!

With specific training in CBT, trauma focused care, mindfulness, and somatic activated healing methods, I used a variety of treatment modalities so that our work is tailored to you as an individual.
Currently FULL. Waitlist available. My style of therapy is very individualized. I acknowledged the broad range of backgrounds and experiences that shape who and why we are the way we are. My goal is to create an environment that fosters safety and collaboration, encouraging you to be able to show up as your authentic self (and at times figuring out who that is). Working together you can expect to gain a deeper understanding of the neuroscience behind your thoughts/reactions/areas of difficulty, awareness into your mind, body, and soul, and take away tools, strategies, and techniques for addressing the areas of change you desire.

Some of the modalities in which I am trained are: CBT ( Cognitive Behavioral Therapy); DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy); Imago; Gottman Method; Psychodynamic; Family Systems; BST (Brief Strategic Therapy); and Emotion Focused.
Do you feel stuck? Stuck in an unhealthy relationship? Stuck in the same emotional state - anxious, fearful, depressed, numb? As Sheryl Sandberg says, "We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change." I work with clients to explore their mental health needs and develop healthier coping skills, thought processes and lifestyles. I have extensive experience working with individuals, couples, and families from diverse backgrounds. I utilize multiple therapeutic modalities in my practice to address the unique needs of each individual.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
