I am a proud professional counselor. In the last ten years of my career I have worked with university students and individuals with severe persistent mental illness. I was drawn to working in higher education because university students are often times ready to change and dive into working on growing as people and developing new patterns of behavior. I enjoy helping anyone willing to take a few moments to try an experiment with their thoughts, or try something new. It may be a bit anxiety provoking at times but it helps us all to grow and change. I aspire to be an expert in helping clients find relief from their issues.

The therapeutic experience should encourage one to live a more satisfying and meaningful life. Everyone has a unique journey through this world and the sum of the experiences along the way (good or bad) make us as individual. Sometimes we get lost, hit bumps, or even get overcome with a tidal wave of things that we need help getting back on our path or creating a new one.

As an experienced Psychologist, I have provided treatment for depression, anxiety, panic, divorce, relationship struggles, and many other problems for years. While I no longer see children or families, my training with those populations has made me a better Psychologist with adults. However, no provider is always a perfect match for every client or problem, so careful exploration and interviewing to determine the best approach for a client is essential.

Have you ever felt like you're either "too much" or "not enough"? This could be a general struggle, or it could be related to a specific trait (i.e. too Asian/not Asian enough or too Queer/not Queer enough). Perhaps you struggle to belong and don't feel like you quite fit anywhere. Or maybe factors such as perfectionism, self-doubt, overthinking, or comparison to others are creating problems in your life. All of these issues are quite common, but can also be extremely nuanced. I understand and I can help.

You may not know it but you are already whole. However, for most of us, our whole, authentic self has been lost or covered over by life's trials, traumas, & family/societal de mands. We build up complex defenses. Then we develop an inauthentic self to get by in a complex and confusing world. In our work together we will uncover and rediscover your wholeness, authenticity, and radiance. Clients who would most benefit may have had some past therapy. My clients are typically midlife or older (but not always) and may be experiencing a challenging life transition, or simply want a fuller, richer life.

My approach is to walk alongside you and explore and further process the challenges that may be present in your life. I hope to provide an environment where you may feel safe and accepted. As a Marriage and Family Therapist Associate, I use attachment-based, existential, and systems frameworks. Together, we may work together exploring patterns in relationships, support systems, past and present experiences, and emotions.

I offer hu man centered support mixed with the science of psychological treatment (typically CBT).
Accepting new clients beginning Oct. 7th 2024! I specialize in work with individuals who experience Anxiety Disorders (OCD, General Anxiety, Phobias), Depression, Insomnia, Autism Spectrum Disorders as well as those with medical or complex presentations (e.g. depression and diabetes). I believe therapy must involve a hu man connection and have come to find a good sense of humor is critical to the work done in therapy. Without a strong therapeutic relationship, it is nearly impossible to make progress. However, within the context of a collaborative, supportive environment, CBT tools can be very useful.

John and Julie Schwartz Gott man of the internationally-acclaimed Gott man Institute; and, Dr.
Hello, my name is Steven Cohn. Since the onset of Covid 19 I am currently conducting all of my couples sessions via teleconferencing. I meet with couples who live anywhere in Oregon, including Bend, Eugene, and Ashland. My clients are reporting that our online sessions feel just as meaningful and productive as our in-office sessions. If love, intimacy, and passion has faded from your relationship, then I'm here to help. Poor communications, financial problems, low sexual desire, blending a family, child rearing, an affair, in-laws, and/or health concerns can slowly erode relationship vitality in even the most loving unions.

For couples, I have trained extensively with John Gott man and base my approach on his research.
If you are having problems with anxiety, depression, coping with illness or injury, or because of conflict in your primary relationship, I would be happy to help. I also work well with people who have had long-term problems, or who have found previous therapy unhelpful or of limited benefit. I see therapy as more than just advice, but getting to the root cause and understanding how physical, emotional and belief systems interact. Reducing dependence on medications, relieving emotional suffering, or restoring love and communication are among the goals we can address.

My focus is on helping couples overcome destructive cycles and to re-establish safety, care, and trust. Many couples get stuck in a pattern of conflict and avoidance, of blame and defensiveness. Each of you is looking for safety and comfort, but in opposite ways, and the way you're seeking it is the very thing that triggers your partner. I have advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the most well-researched and effective treatment for couples in distress. The vast majority of couples recover from their distress, heal from their wounds, and reconnect with the love that brought you together in the first place.

What we are looking for in life is often right in front of us yet, we often lack the ability to see it. In contemporary society, many of us are head strong putting the mind and thoughts above the body and feelings. In this manner, we may lose ourselves in a world of mental illusion. When we are able to access our inner nature, comprised in part of our instincts, aptitudes, and intuition, we are more equipped to be self-guided in life and able to achieve balance and wholeness for ourselves.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
